Nothing is new in MMA. Remember when calf strikes were viewed as novel but forget that Bendo was doing them years before? Remember when everyone was saying they couldn't believe Conor had shoulder strikes but Couture was doing them like a decade before? They go unnoticed until they're on the biggest possible stage.

Bingo. Izzy throws mostly 1-3 strikes at a time so what Strickland needed was a way to defend single strikes and short combos while staying in range to hit him back. There's several ways to do that and the Philly Shell is just one of them. Strickland could also have used the Dracula Guard to accomplish the same goal; it also defends the punches from Izzy while allowing Strickland to come back with a quick 1-2 along with knees & kicks.

Way slower guard for countering

I'm sure someone can correct me here if I'm wrong, but calling Strickland's stance a Philly Shell is a reach, no? I mean aside from his stance having some sort of resemblance he really doesn't utilize the the tools that the Philly Shell possesses. He doesn't deflect shots with his shoulder, he doesn't stand in the pocket. Bobby Green's is a lot closer to it than Strickland's.

No one forgot Bendo was one of the first popular guys to use calf strikes first, Rogan used to bring it up all the time and they used to get hard ons talking about bendos legs.

It's not a Philly Shell. People just see the basic stance somewhat resemble a Philly Shell; but he's not fighting using the principles of a Philly Shell.

Strickland has refined and reinvented the Philly Shell

thousands of sherdogger's have tried to pose in the philly shell
i have tried it and it feels most excellent
