The reason Overeem started having more success in the UFC was because of the birth of Econoreem. A fighter that didn't rush in there but instead picked his shots even though he had\has the ability to one shot KO anybody. (And we all know why Econoreem was born, I'm not getting into that.)

If ever there was a time Overeem should have utilized this strategy would have been against a heavy hitter such as Ngannou. But alas, Econoreem was nowhere to be found.

What I think led to Overeem's sloppiness, and I haven't really heard anyone mention this, (and this is the main reason for this thread), was that he fought emotional. I think he got tired of everyone talking about Ngannou's power.

I think he was probably like..."wtf?! everyone's forgetting who I am, and the KO power that I have?" Hence the switch back to the nickname..."The demolition man."

So I think he wanted to go out there and make a statement and remind everyone of who the "other big hitting guy in the division was". Except when you try too hard for a KO and fight with emotion, you start swinging wildly and leaving yourself open to get "caught!"

Which is what happened.

I think Econoreem would have had a much better showing.

Now I'm not saying Econoreem wouldn't have lost anyway, as we all know... with his KO power, he can beat anybody. But due to his chin, he can also lose to anybody.

It just wouldn't have been so spectacular.

I think he just panicked.

He tried to hurt and discourage Ngannou. But I don't think that can work against him.

Any fighter must make Ngannou work hard and gas. That's the only way to discourage Ngannou. He even breathes heavy when he talks.

Gotta make Ngannous heart work hard to break him.

Reem has legit striking. Just Ngannou has A-Level Power. Pick your shots and don't Bang...

Reem came to grapple and work from the clinch
Panicked when he clinched Francis and got nowhere.

Some truth to this I think.

Mostly, he panicked after he felt Ngannou's strength in the clinch.

Always rooting for the Reem, a legit warrior through and through, same as the guy in your av.

Ya. You could see it in his face, as soon as he clinched he looked like he knew right away that was the wrong avenue.

I thought the same thing, he usually is a bit of a runner against good strikers but he played stupid against Francis and paid for it....stipe isn't that stupid and will Make him play Stipe's game...

I'm surprised no one even mentions that Ngannou ate a shot to deliver that ko on Overeem.

Here’s the one thing that everyone mentions:

Lowkey Reem landed a punch on Francis' ear just before getting KOd. Had 0 effect on him

Except it was nowhere near landing cleanly.

His fist didn't even connect, it was his wrist\top of the thumb area that landed.

I just rewatched on fightpass and I found it odd that overeem gets the clinch aat 4:45 and then gets put against the cage and at 3:45 they are separated. And the first exchange after that Overeem gets KO'd. His gameplan was probably to make him work in the clinch, adrenaline dump, and then start to fight him. Instead Mirgliatta breaks them up and then the fight ends less than 30 seconds later. Huge assist by Mirgliatta.

The one thing no one mentions is "rigged". Look at the fight ending sequence for Overeem and tell me that is professional fighter in there. He "pulls" both punches that could have connected with power easily before pulling his right arm BEHIND HIS BACK leaving his head to get "soccer kicked into Bolivia with a fist." Watch the sequence and tell me something doesn't seem "off" about how it plays out.

I now award you a promotion to black belt in Sherdog BroPsychology.

So let me get this straight, Overeem intentionally held back his punches, let down his defense, got one of the hardest uppercuts to ever land in the octagon against his chin because it was rigged from the beginning?

{<huh}<Huh2><{katwhu}>

Man he's what we Sherdoggers call a genius

After watching this so many times all I can think now is how lucky Ngannou is that Reem did not throw those punches well. He very well could have been knocked stiff if overeem tightened up that left hook.

Ngannou is a beast for sure. Hopefully we get to see him tested against Stipe. I don't want a quick KO on either end. I'm picking stipe round 2 tko/ko.
