Literally have no clue who you are....sorta like Mona Lisa I guess.

Look me straight in the face and tell me you knew her name was Lisa Gherardini.
I know the story, didn't remember her last name. I also won't remember her last name after this.

It's Wikipedia level info and there were a bunch of articles on it in the early 2010's

Who cares if you know me or not, I sure don't
But I did notice you didn't deny being special ed

Did anyone else not know? Has my whole life been a lie?
For real though, I'm with you. I'd always heard growing up that nobody know who she was. I never seriously looked into it or anything but if I was on jeopardy and this was a question, I'd get it wrong.

I just watched a documentary on Leonardo da Vinci the other week. It was made by Ken Burns. It surprised me also that the lady painted was known. I thought she was a mystery person also. Apparently, if I recall correctly, da Vinci just happened to have her painting with him when he traveled to Venice, Italy. It was the first time it was seen by others at the time.

The Ken Burns documentary made me laugh a bit. To me it made da Vinci sound like a slacker.

Interesting to me is how certain pieces of art become world famous. As in, known by almost everybody, not just people interested in art. Pop culture known.

The Mona Lisa was a respected painting from a famous master artist but, from what I have read, it was the theft and recovery of the painting circa 1910's that made it - probably - the most famous painting in the world.

I can't be the only one who didn't realize the Mona Lisa girl had an identity, or that we all knew about her identity.

Up until basically yesterday I thought she was some mystery girl who was theorized to be DaVincis female version.

If the painting already had a name, La Giaconda, when/why did someone give it the different name Mona Lisa? Pick one and stick with it I say

And yes. Artists based and still base their works on real life experiences and impressions.

LOL.

Uhm because Mona Lisa was her first name.
The name (Mona Lisa) was mentioned for the first time in IIRC 1550ties by a man named Vanari (sp?).
"Leonardo painted (husbands name) wife Mona lisa."
