Metal/Rock/Industrial The metal thread \m/

hot take from me: almost all Thrash after the mid 1990s is fucking garbage. very few exceptions. its a subgenre that had a time and place and that time/place is no longer. modern thrash sounds corny and dated.
I don't agree. I think their are a lot of old bands still putting out good shit, new bands making great albums, and more importantly young bands in local scenes that not many people know about fucking crushing it at shows.

I wont say it's garbage but...

We can say Thrash has stagnated. It's been staganated for a long time.

Death Metal may have started out sounding like Death and Possessed but it branched out into so many different sounds.

Black Metal is literally limitless in how it can sound.

Thrash? Thrash is thrash. It's basically the same shit as it was, but with now with weaker more sterile production.

It's not terribly interesting to me. I can completley get by for the rest of my life never ever hearing a new thrash record. I'd just stick to my favorites.

If Megadeth, Slayer, Metallica all quit after 1990, what value was lost??!?!?

hate that singer. even though he was on a good MA album i just think his vocals suck. i skipped seeing Morbid Angel at MDF a few years ago because he was the vocalist.
Steve Tucker doesnt suck at all.

But I def prefer David Vincent. Steve Tucker just kinda sounds like every other Death Metal vocalist.

David Vincent, on those classic MA records, truly had a voice of his own.

The biggest complaint about thrash is "I prefer the old stuff" so I don't agree that it hasn't changed. It's the fact that it has changed that usually makes it less desirable for certain bands. There is Thrash with Hardcore elements, Thrash with Black Metal elements, Thrash with more Death Metal elements. I don't agree that it's all the same.

Perhaps I have a different perspective because I go to live thrash shows all the time and it's still popular in the Bay Area scene. I see bands from all over that nobody has heard of. To me it's the FUNNEST genre to go to live. I like Death Metal but it's a completely different vibe at shows. I also hate the abuse of blast beats by a lot of Death Metal bands too. Hardcore shows are fucking retarded live, even when I like some of the music the wannabe tough guy crowds ruin it. Black Metal shows are fucking boring.

The old stuff was in a time OF GODS AND KINGS.

I understand people having a certain mentality and preference that the thrash scene is more appealing to them, but that isnt for me. I'm just not friendly enough for that I guess hahaha.

I do agree that abuse of blast beats sucks. My favorite thrash are the bands on the extreme end of it, Morbid Saint, Demolition Hammer, Dark Angel, those bands really fucking destroy everything. But the skateboarding pizza thrash, the politics, the retro movement, dudes trying to be Joel Grind? I cant stand that shit. I hate it ahahaha, I never liked it. GET OFF MY LAWN :: yells a cloud ::

My personal tastes and attitude towards music leads me away from the thrash scene. I still hail the old records

a lot of old bands still putting out good shit? most of the time their creative spark is gone by that time and its just a cash grab. i cant name any old school great thrash band that put out a good album in their later career. closest i can think of is Exodus back in like 2004. i can name so many more failures and misfires.
the thrash thats OK nowadays has to borrow from black and death metal to be interesting. ive been around long enough that i remember the thrash "revival" around 2005-2011 when bands like Municipal Waste got really big. and thats over a decade old now - that stuff was derivative back then. so how derivative is today's thrash, i wonder?
best new-ish thrash oriented band i have heard is Ripper and they are certainly death metal influenced.
ive just seen and heard so much thrash metal that it really takes something special to hold my attention. its cool that you have a good local scene but since im not there i cant experience that, so i cant judge it.

here's some Ripper

A good old Manson's tune is better than a lot of new stuff

How old is this? After Holy Wood, Manson's stuff took a hard nose dive, and even then, Holy wood was only OK, compared to what came before.

That's like YOUR OPINION. I'll continue to listen to Thrash and go to Thrash shows. I'm not the only fucking person there either, it still has every bit of a healthy following as Death Metal or any other Metal genre. I like Thrash speed, I like Thrash riffs, I like Thrash crunch, I like Thrash drumming rhythm. I could care less if something is "derivative" of the old shit, I WANT IT TO BE.

The same exact shit can be said for Death Metal, and for some reason when Death Metal branches out into other genres you guys claim that as a commendable feature, but when Thrash Metal does it, it suddenly doesn't count as Thrash anymore. That makes no fucking sense.

You were "old enough to remember 2005-2011" I was old enough to remember the 80's. I was around with Death Metal was fucking invented.

Then why have you not moved on from Thrash !?

We are all into death and black metal now!

Leave this artistically vapid unoriginal world of skateboards and circle pits behind !

Why would I have to move on from anything? Sticking to any single genre is stupid. I do listen to Death Metal and some Black Metal. But I like shit that has rhythm and groove and isn't just a wall of sound. I also don't want to hear blast beats the whole fucking song, that shit is nauseating.

I've never seen skateboards as part of Thrash culture in the Bay Area at least, so not sure where that stereotype is coming from.

And what do you mean about "artistically vapid unoriginal" as if Death Metal isn't derivative all the time either.

Ok, so like a song from a Crossover band? You could have also went with The Boneless Ones "Skate For The Devil"... another Crossover band.

Also, not sure what Death Metal shows you go to but they have circle pits as well...
