Bands like Nifelheim, Destroyer 666, Desaster, (old) Ketzer, and Cruel Force, mix the thrash with the more extreme black and death metals and it injects new life into it.

after putting on MegaDeth I ended up on a random thrash metal playlist. Some of the Destruction stuff is really good a few tunes come on and i'm like thats good who is it? and three times its been Destruction.



Skeletonwitch is good blackened thrash metal. imho

The younger bands trying to emulate the bay area sound..etc...but really...with the exception of Overkill, i just dont find the bands playing "straight" thrash today relevant or interesting.

You ain't looking hard enough, bro. I see straight up young and old thrash bands regularly and they all kick ass.

What is "straight" thrash though? Even back in the early days there was a level of diversity amongst bands and mixing of other styles. It's always been that way.

Well I certainly like MD more than Anthrax. I do enjoy the older MD albums before RIP, especially the unique jazz playing by Chris Poland and Gar Samuelsson


But RIP is the only one I could live without. The stuff later is catchy but soft. Some of that stuff is alright, but again. I could live without.

Slayer on the other hand I still would want to listen to all their stuff up to and including Seasons in the Abyss. Divine intervention is cool...but i can do with out it.

Metallica's first four albums are mandatory for constant listening and RTL is the greatest album ever made lol

To each metalhead his own, I guess. As far as Megadeth is concerned I do enjoy Killing… and of course Peace sells quite a lot in addition to RIP. So far… and Countdown are great additions, I like some of the later stuff including the latest album, which is a pretty good effort.

Overall I dig pretty much every Anthrax album, including the weaker ones, Among the living being as good as RIP in my book and Spreading the disease, Persistence of time and The sound of white noise belonging to my A-list. It’s a matter of style, I guess.

As far as Metallica goes I love the first 4 albums as much as any fan - Ride > Master in my book -, I still enjoy some the Mets’s worst efforts and I’m one of these weirdos that rank South of heaven ahead of the rest when it comes to ranking Slayer’s LPs. Everything until Seasons is great and I have a soft spot for God hates us all.

if I had to rank them I’d say Metallica > Slayer = Anthrax > Megadeth, but i certainly do enjoy Megadeth very much. And RIP is certainly top 5 to me, along with Ride, Master, South and Among…

What is "straight" thrash though? Even back in the early days there was a level of diversity amongst bands and mixing of other styles. It's always been that way.

I guess it's not cut and dry but I just dont get excited by too much of the newer bands. I guess my tastes shift to the extreme side. I guess I can dig on a new rock or heavy metal band (even though no new bands challenge the older ones) but with thrash I am quite satisfied with the old records.

Best Machine Head album is the first one. So fucking HEAVY. I see the drummer Chris Kontos all the time. Super cool dude. I've met Rob Flynn a few times too, nice guy as well. From Forbidden, to Vio-Lence, to Machine Head. Solid pedigree, but ya some of the MH albums suck. Blackening was killer as well.

The reunion was cool with Chris Kontos and Logan Mader the original line up (minus Adam Duce I guess there is still beef there) It was kinda crazy because two guys left MH in like the same day and it seemed to be a disaster but Robb Flynn's was like I don't need you guys and kinda pulled a power move. imo and was like I'll just do a reunion tour with the old members as well as put together a new lineup with Matt Allston now on Drums and Vogg (Decapitaed) on lead guitar. So the tour had two different versions of the band. The original lineup played Burn My Eyes in it's entirety and the new lineup played after playing all the hits and songs from the rest of the catalog. Was super cool but unfortunately got stopped short due to Covid.

I loved Dave McClaine's drumming in MH, always was spot on live too every time i saw them

just got reminded of these guys last week and have been on a kick ever since.



i got to see Bethlehem in 2012 at Maryland Deathfest and their whole set was from the first 3 albums. it was intense. utterly crushing, miserable, drawn out and brooding.
seriously underrated stuff. definitely a main inspiration for all of that "depressive suicidal" black metal (stupid subgenre name).

This will be released on dec 6. They only keep improving with each new album. This one is at least on par with Panopticon's level. Vastly underrated swiss atmospheric black metal!
