For those who like doom, heavy, 80thies goth, insert whatever you like...

This and Sylosis' Cycle of Suffering are my two albums of the year so far.

Dealer's Saint is the best EP by far.

Did I tell this story?

When I pushed for signing Abysmal Dawn to Relapse, part of me liked the fact Charles worked at Century Media. Dudes in the Relapse mailorder were always doing projects and I never wanted something good by any of them to come out on other labels. It felt like us saying our dudes aren't very good, or them saying the label wasn't good enough. That's not necessarily the case, but you get the idea. So a part of me really wanted to see the AD prosper on Relapse instead of CM.

These project came to Relapse via mailorder employee.

Cheesy, but quality shit. Pretty sure the guitarist wound up in Absu.

What can I say about these two, other than we liked to have some fun. :)

Something more out of left field for the label.

Guy from Brutal Truth who did in-house booking around 2000-2005. This ain't the band's best track.

Everybody and their dog ran a label (Escape Artist, Crowd Control, Translation Loss, Level Plane, Red Candle, Enucleation)

This is some funny shit...

You worked for Relapse?

Also did Charles do audio engineering?

Yeah, bro. Sorry, thought I'd alluded to that before. 10 years of my life (93-94, 1999-2009). Everything from mailorder schlep to running the place for years. My name's on a lot of Relapse band's thanks lists from that time period.

To my fuzzy recollection, he was one of those Death Metal masterminds who wrote all the music and handled production. But I was never the guy talking to the bands. That was our promotions wizard (who has been running Season of Mist USA for the last 10 years or so). That guy has the stories! I've got some Matt Pike ones, but I love the dude too much to spill the beans.

That's sick, dude!

Thanks. It was basically a dream come true. Everyone should be so fortunate. All that's left now though is stories, so I might as well share 'em.

Here's one. Relapse had just gotten the promos in for Mastodon's "Lifesblood" ep. The graphic designer, Paul Romano, and I were listening to it on the way to my place after work to discuss another project. I started the journey saying I didn't hear what was so special about the band. In my defense, I hadn't seen them live yet. By the end of the ep I was thinking maybe there might be something to these guys. I had no idea.

They soon opened for High On Fire on a tour that coincided with the release of "Remission" and "Surrounded By Thieves". In Philly the show was at the Balcony Bar, above the Trocadero in Chinatown. Not sure it holds more than 80 people. While both bands killed it, I couldn't believe what I was hearing out of Mastodon. It was like prime Neurosis meets prime Eyehategod. To this day I remember rocking out and thinking to myself that I need to appreciate them in that small of a club right then and there because there was no way that band wasn't blowing up. Boy did I overlook greatness.

Sometimes you gotta see a band live to know what's up. They toured their balls off on that record and destroyed night after night. Bands playing after Mastodon knew they needed to bring it. Most got crushed. It's a testament to High On Fire that they held their own on that tour.
