i put out a recommendation request on the forum that pointed me towards Vengeful Spectre to see if there is anything else from their label worth checking out. they appear to represent a ton of bands from countries one wouldn’t normally think of when looking for new metal rippers

I wondered how you stumbled across it.

At Relapse I pushed the direct sales guy to do more to crack the Chinese/Asian markets. Nothing came of it. Japan was the only country we made steady sales in. I think there may have been a Malaysian buyer. Indonesia had some Metal fans that would mailorder. There was a group of like 20 Malaysian (?) dudes who sent a picture of them all decked out in Death Metal shirts who asked for some free shit. Can't remember if we sent 'em anything.

There was a group of like 20 Malaysian (?) dudes who sent a picture of them all decked out in Death Metal shirts who asked for some free shit. Can't remember if we sent 'em anything.

the metalheads thread on the replacement what.cd forums is probably the most active thread in the music subforum. a ton of recommendations get posted there, many of which are for the more dedicated metalhead, but i do come across a lil nugget of pure gold like Vengeful Spectre from time to time while weeding through all the chaff that doesn’t strike a cord w/ me in the same way.

not surprised there’s a market in Malaysia considering the amount of fan support Wormrot has over there. obviously being based out of Singapore helps, but the scene doesn’t appear to be that niche over there since they maintain a pretty busy show schedule. outside of Japan, Asia is for sure an untapped resource when it comes to the metal & hardcore scene. haven’t gotten any bites on my request, so i’m probably just gonna start picking through Pest Productions releases at random later tonight & see if i strike oil.

One of the few places I bear a grudge against. Long story, but it involves drunk assholes fighting in the streets, me trying to get away, and a dickhead cop somehow deciding that I'm causing a problem. On the plus side, it seemed clean.

this very situation is so familiar to me it kinda warms my heart lol. did this happen in the downtown area? one of the biggest negatives of such a tiny city is that most of the nightlife venues & bars are crammed together, spice that up w/ a bunch of colleges that are practically stacked on top of each other, & bam, you have the making of a perfect soup for sloppy dickheads acting hard & cops who are ready to discriminate against anyone they think looks like a shit starter.

Yeah, downtown. I was living in Philly and my buddy came out from LA with his girl. In the middle of the visit we road-tripped to Providence to ssee John Spencer Blues Explosion. His choice. I was like, whatever.

After the show we hit some packed fuckin' bar, right before last call. Soon enough everyone gets kicked out, same as the other bars. The streets are full. We cabbed it down from the BnB my buddy booked. Getting one to go home at that time was proving difficult. Next you know a fight breaks out. Then another. Then another. A police presence materialized. We asked one cop where to catch a cab (since phoning for one hadn't panned out). He says up the street.

We go up the street (about 6 of us). There's cops and about 20 people outside of another bar. But at least it looks like a larger intersection. Out of nowhere, one of the two pigs, from a distance of maybe 30 feet, points and yells at me to get out of there (and head back towards where all the fights were). I'm fucking dumbfounded because there's two dozen other folks milling about on the sidewalk as well. How I'm singled out still makes no sense to this day.

I don't move fast enough, he marches up and starts getting aggressive in my face. I try to explain I'm with these other folks, we're looking for a cab, and I don't even know where the fuck I'm staying in town. He wasn't having any of it. So with discretion being the better part of valor, I shuffled off as demanded.

He went back to his crowd control duties and I doubled back across the street as soon as it seemed safe. We all shortly got a cab from there and no ride was taken down to the station. All I could wonder is if he just hated dudes with long hair or if maybe I looked like the guy that banged his girl.

The next week I wrote a scathing review of the town I was gonna send to the local paper. But you know how it is, just writing the thing gets shit off your chest. But to this day I think of Providence as that fictitious place in the movies where the townies and college boys are mortal enemies.

you have no idea how accurate your impression of Providence is because this is one of the most Providence stories i have ever heard. it hits an extra tasty note on my palate coming from someone that doesn’t live in RI, MA, or CT.

Providence would be more like an inspiration or blueprint for the townies vs college boys trope since nobody is actually a Providence townie. the irl Providence version of townies vs college boys actually splits three ways: crust punks/hipsters vs affluent college bros vs club jabronies. lots of blood in these streets.
