I went to an awesome armory in some small town in Austria.

It was assembled just as guns started to take over so never really got used. Has armour that was designed to stop bullets, which worked for a while but they gradually realised it's pointless.
It shows a really cool transition, lots of pieces with bullet holes or dents, stupid thick breastplates etc.

I’ll jump in here. No single one, but pre Charlemagne vs post, the Vikings showing up, the crusades, and the Black Death. The were the biggest I have seen in Western Europe.

In the east the Muslims, then the Vikings showing up, the crusades had a big impact there as well, Genghis Khan, the Black Death.

Anyone else want to chime in and add some cool facts and big things that changed different parts of the medieval ages.

It's crazy to think that turmoil after a king died was practically customary during that time. If the Khan family didn't squabble with each other the empire wouldn't have fractured. Good thing it did though.






Something about those steppes does something to people lol.

Armor is kinda a cool thing to notice during each age. Going from chain mail, to the early forms of plate and the great helms of the crusades, to the 13 hundreds having better looking armor with the bascinet helm the end of the 14 hundreds with the shiny fancy armor and the armet helmet most people think of with knights.

Some of these helms are pretty intimidating.

Any idea what those tiny holes are for? Some look like a missing rivet but others look really out of place. I'm talking about the ones on the forehead not the lower breathing holes.

You asked for ideas not facts so allow me to speculate, either just for cooling or more likely so you can attach symbols to the helm. Maybe even put a rope through it so it's easier to carry.

Think you could hack it in medieval times? Kind of hard to believe just how long it was, modern times has only been less than 200 years while medieval times was over 1000. Wouldn't mind being a peasant in a safe area away from raiding foreign armies, plague centers, civil wars etc. running around in an enchanting forest.

Not sure if I would like castle life too much even though it wasn't as bad or as dark as some of us might have believed. I think I would be a good "lord" to my servants and private army.

I love the middle ages. Would I want to live in them? Fuck no.
I have had various benign health issues at various points in my life that, without modern medicine, would have possibly killed me, or made my life miserable.

Also, I don't come from nobility so would have likely been some peasant my whole life.

Yes, noone was slicing through plate and mail like in gay fantasy movies. Stabbing or breaking it with armor-breaching weaponry is completely another thing.

We may somewhat judge from historic finds. For example, not that long ago the body of king Richard III of England was found, who is known to have died in battle. He was wearing a full plate armor during the battle. Scientists found 13 bruises on his head, 2 of them lethal, and some other wounds on his body. A couple of them seemed to be mocking or desecrating in nature so most likely were inflicted after the king was struck down. seems that during the battle king Richard lost his helmet and only then his enemies managed to kill him.
His arms and legs though, protected by armor, were unharmed.

Reviewing that we may judge that medieval armor contemporary to Richard III offered outstanding protection to its wearer and it was hard to kill a skilled fighter in good armor.

Of course the king had top tier armor. But one does not slice through plate armor, even if it is rather shitty. Even mail armor protects well against slicing. You may stab through low grade armor or cave it in with a power strike rather easily but not slice through it. Is not foil, its iron.
And in fantasy movies they just slice through plate like its butter.

@Blood and Thunder you really wanna be a peasant? Absolute drudgery, farming day in day out only you barely produce shit and since you are a serf you are doing it for your lord. Food is a bunch of bread maybe a little cheese or beans. So your nutrition and health kinda sucks. Ah then the lord/king needs to raise the militia every few years and you get to go fight against other peasants when the landowners have a pissing match.

If I'm going to face that much danger I'd at least want some leisure and freedom, hunter gatherer sounds much better to me.
