Ariel made a noble stand at the conference but ultimately what's he going to do? He's going to cover 200 and help drive sales like always. Why though? He owes the UFC nothing. He could argue however, that THEY owe HIM fights that are worthy of his services promoting them, free of charge and to far greater effect than this $10m ad.
A Conor fight makes not just the UFC more money but also everyone involved in covering the event professionally wins. Web traffic, youtube hits, all through the roof when Conor fights. Dana pulling Conor is quite literally hitting these journalists in their pockets.
Soccer journalists cover the major teams and players, many golf journalists wouldn't bother covering a tournament without Tiger. Yet the UFC are in this unique position of saying here's 198, that's 200, go cover it. Dennis Siver could headline and they would be in attendance. It is a very unusual stranglehold on the media that no other sport has. They could say stop this petty bullshit and give us the fight we want or we will enforce a media blackout. It is our livelihoods at stake here. They are in a far more powerful position than the athletes.
