The Captain Marvel from the comic books was already OP, doesn't have anything to do with the movie. Marvel needed more characters at her ability level to offset Thanos and the Infinity Gaunlet, and to lead into the next phase of the MCU

I saw the news, I didn't see anything she directed so no idea how good she is (what Marvel head Feige saw) or if this is just a PR move in our current times.

Guess we will find out. Then again looking back now the bar wasn't raised that high that first movie wasn't impressive, very formulaic / by the numbers so I have no desire to re-watch it anytime soon.

Candyman Sequel Filmmaker Nia DaCosta to Direct CAPTAIN MARVEL 2

Nia DaCosta is already helping revive a '90s property with her take on MGM and Universal's upcoming Candyman. Now the filmmaker is taking on the sequel to Marvel Studios' '90s-set movie Captain Marvel, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Megan McDonnell, a writer on the upcoming Disney+ Marvel series WandaVision, is penning the script for the sequel, which will once again star Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, fighter pilot turned superhero.

Captain Marvel 2 has a July 8, 2022 release date.

The first Captain Marvel opened in March 2019 and went on to earn $1.1 billion globally and helped lead into Avengers: Endgame. Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck directed. The cast also included Jude Law, Ben Mendelsohn, Annette Bening, Gemma Chan and Lashana Lynch, whose onscreen daughter Monica Rambeau will appear in WandaVision (this time as an adult and played by Candyman actor Teyonah Parris).

DaCosta broke out with her debut feature Little Woods, which starred Tessa Thompson and premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2018. Her Candyman film, which she co-wrote with Jordan Peele and Win Rosenfeld, was initially supposed to debut June 12, but has been delayed by COVID-19 to Oct. 16. It has still managed to stir cultural conversation, thanks to a socially relevant teaser that earned praise when it was released in June.

Nobody is triggered by female super heroes. Wonder Woman did fine, and people have been looking forward to the sequel. Nobody gives a shit about Captain Marvel. Bland “b” character in the comics, that Marvel keeps trying to shove down everyone’s throats in the name of feminism, and the comics have continued to failed, no matter how many times they reboot the series.
Meanwhile, they cast the snobbiest actress they could find, a true feminazi who couldn’t even be bothered to put in a work out before portraying a super hero, and told the core comics book audience that her movie “wasn’t for white men.”

How was it great?
Where was the threat? Where was the possibility of her losing?
What was the biggest thing that she had to overcome? getting her memories back?
Don't dismiss legit criticisms as being triggered by female superheros.
She was just a nuke that could simply over power any obstacle. This all started with Kevin Feige coming out trying to make the most powerful superhero. Which is another gripe.
Everyone knows a superhero movie is only as good as the villain. This was super weak.

I think diversity just naturally happens when your population is DIVERSE.
