The Jordan Peterson Thread - V2 -

If people would actually listen to what he is saying, it is apparent he is not a racist, sexist or hateful guy.

He just says some things people don't want to hear and it triggers them.

That is the world we are in. If someone says something you don't agree with, they are evil.

Yeah, when you're an entitled millenial who thinks the world is out to get and oppress you, you aren't fond of men like Peterson making statements like "Stand up straight, take responsibility for your own life, fix your own life before you go out trying to fix the world, undertake a heroic journey, understand that suffering is part of the journey and through the suffering you can find meaning and transformation". That is fucking terrifying and they don't want to take the time to actually understand these philosophical realities and instead resort to making statements like "pffft, these ideas are so outdated and ridiculous. what a crack pot!" *smarmy smug liberal cunt smile* It's easier to take this position than to confront the brutality of reality and going on a heroic journey.

One of the things I've learned in my 28 years on this planet is that a lot of people don't like the truth.

I mentioned that his fans are very well familiar with peterson's ideas and that's why his following is growing so exponentially. His ideas are fascinating.
.

You states so much without any foundation because it sounds interesting to put it that way. Go in the real world and try to find anyone that is familiar with him let alone knows much of what he talks about. People just jump on him just like Sam Harris because now I have someone smart that is saying things I want to hear or believe in. Neither, Sam Harris or Jordan Peterson are academics or present arguments with backing that push the needle on anything. It is more or less a lot of personal beliefs wrapped up opinions and psuedo facts that sound nice to people who were thinking the same.

He doesn't have a huge fan base, nor one that is really growing. He only got into the news because some people took offense to what he said about transsexuals. Without that response, he would be just a talking box nobody would have heard of.

I also don't believe he is a provocateur at all from what I can tell. People who think that are just easily offended.

I had read that this was the case (and also others arguing that it isn’t) for some time, but only in the last year have i personally encountered it, when people I was peripherally connected to started mentioning Peterson and making powerful claims against him. For interests sake i’ve been interacting with those people, asking them to prove claims, presenting the actual quotes that they are misrepresenting, etc., and the response, universally, has been escalating rage, ever changing claims and eventual incoherence followed by cutting the conversation from their side.

It’s been really eye opening for me, both the number of people and their volume in asserting Peterson->Violent Nazi->you’re a Trump supporter.

Your last paragraph is internally contradictory. You said his fan base isn't growing, and then directly turned around and said his following is growing because of the bill c 16 issue. Like wtf? It's clear to me that your thinking is entirely incoherent. You can't even formulate base logical statements.

Your first paragraph again moves the goal post. You said his fans can't identify his ideas, then you change it to the general public.

Now you're appealing to common practice? The average person doesn't know who Peterson is, and that means what exactly? Does the average person know Chomsky? Freud? Jung? Dawkins? Hitchens? This is pure silliness and poor thought.

It's like when you ask someone to prove that Trudeau ever said "if you kill your enemies, they win". Rather than calmly finding you a source (because it doesn't exist) they'll get all defensive and start with some other bullshit, and the conversation goes nowhere. It seems like people in general, from all sides of the political spectrum, are getting more and more polarized.

I believe it was Jordan himself who said of his growth,” they come for the scandal but stay for the content”.
That is true in my case. I Find him a a fascinating man who is able to articulate much truth ,imo.

God damn, go clean your room and get your life together.

Lol @ "Jordan Peterson is not an academic that presents arguments with backing that push the needle on anything"

How flagrantly uninformed can you be?

Don't get upset bro when I am not PC. I am just calling it like it is.

You haven’t called anything.

You’re about 5-6 posts deep and haven’t addressed anything Peterson said. Just vague talking points with 0 substance.

You’re the Cathy Newman of this thread.

This thread is pointing out what I think about Jordan Peterson. Any complaint about Peterson is met with another Cathy Newman or "clean your room". That is the superficialness of many of Jordan Peterson's fans. Something to cling onto that sounds smart that resonates with what you already believe. I don't even think most even know what he is talking about when he says "clean your room" and it is no more impressive than saying "first things first".

So what you're saying is that you haven't cleaned your room yet?

I like Peterson when he talks about supporting free speech and his stance against compelled speech. But when he starts talking about Pinocchio and his overly concerned fears of post modernism he losses me. He was good in that video with the woman on NBC the other day. But most of the woo woo stuff he talks about is not interesting to me. When he was on with Rogan and Weinstein, Weinstein came off much better than him.

Clean your room = get your life in order. This isn't difficult stuff.

So your issue is not with Jordan Peterson, but with his internet "fans" who flippantly toss out superficial catch phrases to make fun of you?

Ok, sure... plenty of them do not fully grasp what Peterson is getting at, in fact most don't, because what Peterson is getting at is built on 30+ years of knowledge and is not easily communicated, consumed or digested.

But that IS what makes it fascinating, and it resonates because it's true.

If you want to take issue with the obnoxiousness of some of JPs fans... ok you have a case. Making statements like JP is not an academic with sources or any backing just makes you sound like a damn moron.

So what you're saying is that you haven't cleaned your room yet?

I am saying that your response isn't even something that Peterson would stand for or say or even makes sense in the context of how Peterson described "clean your room". So, you are a Peterson meme superficial fan, which is alright but it doesn't help in pushing the needle on anything. Much of his following centers on this idea that things are wrong and it is wrong to not be allowed to say that they are wrong, which is fine in of itself. Though, I would argue that most of his followers only follow this half way because if you like he says are ok with things being anti-PC to get to the truth or correct solution, you have to be ok with listening to offending responses to get to the truth. In the Cathy interview, he flat out says that he is ok with her potentially offending him in order to dig to the truth. If you go in on Peterson, than you have to be ok with me saying that I believe that he is an idiot creates all these over generalized ideas that often only serve the purpose of sounding nice or intelligent and very rarely have any backing. Go ahead and argue that he doesn't generalize or pull shit out of the air whole cloth, (feminist support islam due to their unconscious desire to be brutally dominated. - who makes shit like up and is taken seriously. What he does wouldn't be taken seriously in a debate. If you want to treat him as a life coach or something like that go ahead. Telling people that "cleaning your room is a good idea" isn't a bad thing and neither is telling someone "first things first and last things last" or "the glass is always half full" or "stitch in time saves nine" but it neither new or special.
