What do you think is the reason we don't see more Hoost-style low-kicks in mma?

Those low-kicks tortured many K-1 legends. It seems like a great kick for mma since it is not so easy to catch it and ground the opponent and it scores points. Does anyone remember Igor Vovchanchin's legs getting tore up by Hoost...he could not even stand on it and the fight had to be called.

The best use of the low-kick I ever saw in mma was Marco Ruas vs Paul Vareleans in UFC-7 in Buffalo NY, in which he chopped down the near 7ft Vareleans to win the belt even though he had a broken hand.

Also Pedro Rizzo (student of Marco Ruas) and Maurice Smith both took out Tank Abbott with a heavy dose of low-kicks. Rizzo took away Tank's legs and KO'd him. Maurice caused Tank to submit by waving off the fight and walking away.

Since then I never saw someone use them to cause that type of damage.

Why do you think it is now rare to see that kick?

he really didnt do it that different than most, he was just a lot better at it and most importantly amazing at timing it and setting it up

in MMA, people use low kicks like jabs, something to throw out there when your opponent is outside of punching range. hoost used it as an exclamation point for his combinations. slamming it everytime they got too focused on his punches. this confidence that they wouldnt be prepared to check it, and the way he threw it when his hips were loaded on his left hook, let him really commit and throw 100% into it.

even aldo does his "left hook to the body to turn his hips and wind up on the low kick", though he doesnt do it at the end of a 3+ punch combination like hoost often did and he took a step forward on his right foot before the kick, so he didnt have as much room to accelerate it like hoost (though to be fair, hominick was backpeddling from it)

Just looking at those make you wince! So effective and really gets your opponents attention. They don't know which stance to be in after a few of those nasty kicks sting those nerves.

Thanks for those GIFS, that is exactly my point. Those were exclamation points! If Igor could not take these...they must be out of this world on the pain scale.

yeah, he was great at making them cover up so they dont see the kicks coming

plus look at how far back his foot gets before he throws it. its like the kicking version of the h-bomb where he winds up from the other side of the cage lol

notice his left leg sneaking forward across those three set up punches, widening his stance so he can load up his kick more. brutal!

Thiago Alves and Jose Aldo are the only one who comes close.

Your scientific knowledge of this art leads me to think you are Dutch or part Dutch. Am I right? If not, I apologize, just seems like a Hoost-Aerts-Bas-Bonjasky-Dutch-fight-science.

Your observations are spot on!

the antoni hardonk leg kick is the only time i have ever seen someone go out from a leg kick.

haha nah, but i trained at Kings MMA for awhile and i had to figure out why my leg hurt so bad everyday after sparring lol

follow up leg kicks from a left hand> sporadic leg kicks with no set ups

Alves did IMHO have the benefit that WW didn't at that point(a bit better today but not THAT much) didn't have many savey kickboxers besides himself and GSP, mostly brawling wrestlers.

Did you see Rizzo vs Severn. Or Smith vs Abbott?

yes i have but neither of those fighters got knocked out from a single leg kick. they say scott bannon (aussie thai boxer) knocked people out with leg kicks but i haven't seen it.

A lot of guys don't practice kicking that much.

Pain really is the best teacher. I miss those fights that make you twist your face up because the kicks look like they hurt so much. There are a few in the UFC these days but not as much as there could be.

So many fights that were lost to decisions because of sloppy kicks that don't score points and don't help to set anything else up. Also so many kicks that get caught thrown instead of this excellent striking tool that set may opportunities in motion.

Thanks, I will look him up.

There is always a reason why the kick work anyway. so that dont mean that Alves dont have good technique and form.

Cro Cop TKO'd Hidehiko Yoshida with leg kicks, not always but often set up off punches. Mirko threw nine I believe in the fight, around the 7th leg kick Yoshida started to show some serious pain, the 8th knocked him down, he was very slow to get up, and the 9th knocked him down and he refused to get up.

Hoost never had to worry about being taken down
