There is simply no excuse for voting for the most unqualified Presidential candidate in history vs. the most qualified unless you are stupid and easily deceived. Because her supporters would rather race and genderbait instead of realize that their bullying tactics against those who had concerns about Clinton, caused potential voters to vote for Trump out of spite.

She got crushed because she represented the establishment. The same establishment that is pushing political correctness, globalization, LGBT "pride" and multiculturalism at the expense of reduced freedom of expression, increased inequality, job loss and eroded border security. In essence, the political, corporate and media elites dismissed blue collar workers and rural Americans' concerns for years, portraying them as nothing more than angry white men who are racists and misogynists. These people are disappointed in the system, which they perceived is screwing them. They held their tongue because of the fear of being labelled as some fringe lunatic by the left, but Trump's candidacy gave them an outlet for their anger.

Trump himself is mostly a piece of turd, but he represented the only option those marginalized voters to give a middle finger to the establishment. When anger erupts, it's never pretty. It tells you how angry some of the silent voter had become when they would rather pick a loud mouth oompa loompa over Clinton.

Clinton got more votes, though, and Obama is way more popular than both candidates. That explanation doesn't hold water.

There's no magic-bullet explanation. In any presidential election, either candidate has a good chance to win. I don't know that we can go much deeper than that with any reliability.
