Now, whether this is a Mayberry or War room thread I don't know. It does have SOMETHING to do with SCIENCE! but I don't think it is political in nature.

I don't have some long drawn out conspiracy theory. I am just taking ONE STAT and telling you this is evidence for a gross misdiagnosis.

From SCIENTIFIC AMERICA:
What is the prevalence of autism in the U.S.?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 1 in 68children in the U.S. have autism. The prevalence is 1 in 42 for boys and 1 in 189 for girls. These rates yield a gender ratio of about five boys for every girl.

How do clinicians diagnose autism?
There is no blood test, brain scan or any other objective test that can diagnose autism—although researchers are actively trying to develop such tests. Clinicians rely on observations of a person’s behavior to diagnose the condition.

What possible reason could there be for males to be 5X as likely to have autism???? Boys are more about play and hyper and their hearing is not as good as girl's which is bad when you compound it with boys sitting in the back of the class.

I think kids that are not ADHD are put on meds at a much higher rate just to keep them docile for the teachers.

This immediately indicates a significant diagnosing error. The ratio between males and females should be exactly identical. Just like the ratio of males to females in STEM fields.

Why are food allergies up so much? That a conspiracy too? Autoimmune disorders and autism have similar mechanisms and some people think autism is an autoimmune disorder.

Stupid comment. I know you are trying to be funny but it just makes you look like an idiot to insert gender politics here.

It is also more likely among first born and children with asthma. Males, first born with asthma. Which fits in with the autoimmune theory.

It was a joke, Sharpie.

Not so much a misdiagnosis, but an intentionally over diagnosis to error on the side of caution and getting any even slight socially (or greater) challenged kid the help they need at a young age so they have a higher chance of success/normal life especially in the milder cases

Sorry to hear about your misdiagnosis. :(

You hear that Ma?!?!?! Ima smaaaaart!!!

Yes, it is good to label a kid autistic that is not so he is treated that way. I could see how that would be like super helpful.

Hey, kid you are autistic so we are going to take you out of real school and put you in fake school and dump pills in your face.
Mother Theresa was never so kind, I says.

While I get the joke, it would have to be something with testosterone that would cause such a discrepancy in boys...if they are correct diagnosis.

There are tens of thousands of medical problems that are more prevalent in one gender than the other. So for starters, your assumption that it's a conspiracy because the ratio is different is retarded.

Here's an example of an interesting autism test. No normal child would ever fail this test. This test really underlines how defective their social cognitions are. Inb4 OP fails test.

Its heartbreaking to see kids with natural energy be taught there is something wrong with them and put on drugs that mellow them out and have a high chance of making them dependant on them for the rest of their lives. They will never know who their true selves are because they are pretty much someone's science project.

This is a popular test, they also test toddlers this way to check development. The one problem was that it is not always clear if the children actually understood the question- it seems obvious to us that they're asking what someone else would think but it's not always obvious that the children do. I get that's part of the problem, that maybe they simply can't understand the question because they can't empathize well, but there is some ambiguity. Though "where would Anne look?" is better than I've seen the question phrased in the past, something like, "where does Anne think the marble is?", and when the kid just reaches for the marble he suddenly has autism.

Really, do you mind listing them? And seeing how many are NOT DIRECTLY RELATED TO sex specific ORGANS and due to testosterone or estrogen?
Remember these are kids. So stuff like stress or bad diet don't really count.

I mean, it isn't like you are a total imbecile who makes shit up.

This is how I know you have absolutely no fucking clue what you're talking about.

Most autism is treated with behavior reinforcement, not pills. They aren't taken out of class except for the ones further on the spectrum, and are instead given some extra assistance for their normal classes (such as sitting in front or back, wherever they're most comfortable, and extra time on tests, etc) and the teacher's a heads up that the kid may act oddly and that it is best either that they roll with it or firmly let the child know they are to stay seated and quiet when class is in session. Others so that they either do or don't call on the kid and put them under pressure in front of peers (only call if they're sure to get the question right type thing)

So quit the judgmental shit on a situation you have no experience on besides getting your panties in a bunch

Source- wife is a middle school counselor and often creates the personal development plan for kids with slight learning obstacles (such as mild autism) where they're kept in regular ed classes. Also have a cousin who had autism caught at 3 years old and at 15 now you absolutely can't tell unless he's lost some where he freaks the F out if he doesn't have a map or something. 3rd, my wife has a friend who has mild autsim. He's a little odd in ways, but he's a heating and cooling engineer for a big company and about to get married to a nurse so clearly he's doing fine. Just a little quirky

This is just one of many tests, which tests one specific aspect of autism. They don't fail this one and automatically get tagged autistic. They'd basically have to fail multiple tests in multiple areas of autism... in which case, they are autistic.

Here's another test on the same aspect (social cognition). It's mind blowing that she(?) fails the test, but autism gon autism.

That's what I mean though, it's not clear to me the kid understands the question "what would Jane think is in the box?" But yeah, I get it's not a one and done sort of deal.

I heard vaccines are to blame

Get them the help they need or get them prescribed some costly meds?

translation: i only sort-of know what autism is, and how its diagnosed. i do not know the innate, or conditioned differences between male/female. therefore, ill make the assumption that psychologists / psychiatrists are a part of some vast conspiracy to over-diagnose this pathology.

and why are you dragging adhd into this? autism is quite different.

mostly what psychologists have to go on are the reports of parents and teachers. if they say the kid beats his head on the desk and wont sit still........it might not be a conspiracy........it might just be a result of the information the shrink has to go with.

I would have failed too :(
