The Haunting Of Hill House TV Series (Netflix)

I thought it was weird that they needed to change actors for the dad. He doesn't really seem much older than the other actor. The scene when the house worker guy gives a long monologue about his mom and wife and when he was a baby and the whole time I'm like, "Who are you?" Show is pretty good but episode 6 and 7 are almost total filler.

The hype behind this was nothing but that it seems.
All this 'people are passing out/being sick' stuff has been around for a long time, to hype up horror movies. My mates that have seen this said it was basically a long-winded drama rather than a horror. I dont think it'd be my cup of tea but nobody I know who has seen it found it remotely scary - not a bad idea, but badly executed, was the common consensus.
Poor execution is not a valid criticism of the first half of this show. It's a show that asks you to feel; to be as vulnerable as its family. It's not trying to be The Exorcist. You should try watching it rather than judging it by whatever lame marketing reached you, or the provincial consensus of your mates. They sound like the type who like slashers. This is nearly pure psychological drama, demanding a resonance of empathy, and sits on the opposite side of the spectrum from those kinds of horrors. It sounds like your friends would prefer movies like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre or The Hills Have Eyes.

Isn't this around 25 years later? Luke is like 31, Steven and Shirley look around 38-41. The older Hugh was fine IMO. He looked similar enough to young Hugh.

The house worker was great. I enjoyed him in the show. Him and his wife added an element to the history of the house and both were very likable. The were also involved in a great scene at the end of the season.

Episodes 6 and 7 were awesome. This show just isn't for you.

I want the two posters above, banned.

I’m a tad confused on the end honestly, is there actually a resolution, like couldn’t the house just continue to fuck with em

Nah. Just highlight their unintentional hypocrisy. By opining that this show is not scary implies that some other show is. Otherwise, there would be no reason to make that qualification. All shows wouldn't be scary, and either there would be no reason to declare that, or alternatively one would mock you for finding any show scary (i.e. "if you're scared of a movie, you're a pussy").

What's the significance of that? It proves that they have been scared by some other show-- any show, doesn't matter. Chew on that for a moment. They themselves have been frightened by flashing lights and sounds. Unless you're an epileptic or a spinster with a weak heart how do you justify that? Flashing lights and sounds can't harm you, and yet they themselves have been scared by some form of them.

So not only are they beta pussies, too, but they're also too dimwitted to recognize it.

uh if this show scares you....LMFAO beta
What ever. Different things for different people. This wasn't terribly scary. But the atmosphere and creepy build up work on me far more than in your face jump scares. And the few jump scares they did have on this were very well set up. I love horror movies, but I rarely get creeped out these days. Last time I was this scared was the Conjuring. A few other horror movies since then have been good and I enjoyed, but really weren't scary. For example "A Quiet Place" I loved. But it was suspense with fear of what may happen more than scary.

it's supposed to be super scary but I'm on like episode 7. There has probably been five minutes of scary.

Its much better with headphones and a tablet, imo.

I really want to reply to this in a long winded reply about why you are right, and why it might not, but it would be huge spoiler city and I don’t want to ruin some of the surprises for some.

Even with a spoiler tag someone’s gonna read it anyway lol.

Google the alternate ending they almost went with, and how they changed the picture at the back of the room at the party at the end, that alternate ending very very SLIGHTLY different than the one they went with would have changed EVERYTHING.

We bing watched this weekend, gf wanted to watch it I had seen the recommendation and avoided it since the genre has bored me with everything being the same crap lately but this one drew me in after episode 2 and watched the whole series in two nights.

The only thing I really don’t like is how the last episode feels like they just rushed the ending to wrap up the series and they could have paced out the last two episodes to season two.

And if they had went with the alternate ending episode two would have been a for sure.

All in all it was great imo, and I’ve been bored with this genre for over a decade but used to watch ALOT

It really tugged on my heart strings at some points too since Kid Luke looks kinda like my son and has that same innocence about him.

Watching it I’d sometimes go peep into his room and make sure he was still sound asleep safe , especially since he used to have nightmares a lot and something would wake him up and he’d be crying and screaming in bed at night.

And talking about something coming in there etc, the dog started sleeping in his room about 6 months ago and it stopped instantly.

Don’t know if it’s because he would wake up and see the dog and not be alone anymore or if what ever was waking him up isn’t anymore because of the dog.

The dog either sleeps at the foot of his bed, or at his door, but the dog is always between the door and my son at night.

Also they left one major question unanswered that was asked numerous times through the season by some of the characters

Pretty much, yeah. Either you care about the characters and the show works perfectly, or you don't and it would be boring. In most horror the characters are little more than fodder, or at least all but the protagonist. This show is much different and uses it's length to connect you with the family and their dynamic, thus making the atmosphere more about creeping dread than all out scares. It takes patience and attention, but the payoff is worth it.

The Luke centric episode is a perfect illustration of this. Theyve built him up as a drug addled pariah, even blatantly showing this to you in the first episode where you notice him "stealing" from his brother. He's sweating, obviously going to get a fix. Only after the reveal of his action some 4 episodes later, as well as how theyve built up your sympathy for his childhood experiences contributing to his substance abuse, do you finally see and understand his character and his actions and it's heartbreaking. His childhood trauma coupled with his adulthood demons, both real and figurative, have fleshed out a completely different character than you were introduced to and they did in the manner of an expert magician using misdirection to have it happen right in front of your eyes. It's masterful storytelling, regardless of the genre.

Fantastic post, I love that explanation.

I only came across this show last week after enough people had been recommending it to me.

Now I'm seven episodes deep, I think it's one of the best made horror series I've ever seen. Looking forward to finishing it off this week.

Can't stop thinking that the actor who played Steve looks just like pre balding Luke Rockhold without chin .
