This has always been my personal favorite.

depends on the fighter and the era, people are so imitative that if they seee someone do something they start doing it too. Ali's lead/overhand right beating up guys for years, we never saw that before. At least I never saw it, overhands yes, lead rights no. I'd suppose they all can be devastating, Don Curry's left hook counter to McCrory's jab was a thing of beauty. But on the whole, I have to say a lead right or counter is a great weapon if you have the reflexes, speed and power to make it work. It's still not used enough, why do I say that? Well, the jab is the most used punch in boxing, most thrown and offers the most opportunity to counter. Now, you can counter to the body or the head. Tim Witherspoon was told to nullify Holmes brilliant left jab by countering to the ribs. You have to have timing to do that, some guys are just better at it than others. they throw the jab, you slip and thrown in your right to the body or head. Tim arguably beat holmes in that fight and that was the very first close fight Holmes had as champ and his age got questioned but it was just good strategy. roy jones used over hand rights to hit those 175 pound men at will and although he didn't have the same power at that weight, he still was able to dominate or kayo guys, and of course there was the right underneath that broke Virgil HIll's ribs in their fight.

The counter left hook is great to but way harder to pull off, more body mechanics needed, a step more at least, you have to slip left in most cases and come up with the hook, of course if their hand is up like it's supposed to be, you'll land on glove. That's the great thing about the right, the jab is the defensive side for that punch and it's already extended. Hopkins tore Trinidad a new asshole using Ali's invention and because these guys aren't used to seeing it, just as George wasn't, they get caught by surprise. Ali threw the lead much like a jab, not as much power and moving the fist before the rest of the body, totally opposite of how he threw his typical straight right. An old guy told me he counted the rights ali landed, he counted 103 right hands to George to bring him down in that fight. Like a jab indeed.

I suppose the spirit of the thread is about the KO, but Floyds pull counter deserves mention. Not any one particular example but he'd win fights with this same punch against all levels and styles of fighters.

So did Ali. The pull counter was his go to shot much of the time particularly for countering lazy jabs. Floyd's was sharper, and a bit more reliable, but for a heavyweight Ali's was pretty polished.
