The golden asteroid that could make everyone on Earth a billionaire

Wouldn't the gold just be devalued then? I mean it would be great at first, but not everyone would get a piece of gold from the asteroid. Just those involved with the mining. So it might help an economy that has a space program that could mine, and maybe a few billionaires would become trillionaires. The only benefit we would see is perhaps a improved economy.

Yup, it killed the Spanish economy. The boatloads full of precious metals. Also why gold is a terrible medium for exchange. Imagine there are like one trillion dollars sitting in a cave that nobody knows exists, that nobody is aware was printed.... If that was discovered, it would add to the money supply and make it worth less. If I own gold and want it to go up, the last thing I want is a shit ton of it being found. It is dilution. It would make everything more expensive.

Generally it is thought that this high inflation was caused by the large influx of gold and silver from the Spanish treasure fleet from the New World, including Mexico, Peru, and the rest of the Spanish Empire.[2](p70)

Specie flowed through Spain, increasing Spanish prices, and then spread over Western Europe as a result of Spanish balance of payments deficit. This enlarged the monetary supply and price levels of many European countries. Combined with this influx of gold and silver, population growth and urbanization perpetuated the price revolution. According to this theory, too many people with too much money chased too few goods.

I wonder what happens to the value of a commodity when you introduce a stupidly massive quantity of the previously scarce thing into the economy? It seems we all become rich!

Might Have to look into investing in the space mining companies for the grandkids.

That ain't shit. Wait until you see my asteroid full of Dutch tulip bulbs.

Very underrated comment. LOL.

I do find it so weird that somehow we, as humans, place value in something that in reality has no value to us as far as things we NEED to survive.

Really weird
It won't give you anything, but hey, it's shiny

The population of earth would probably benefit more by this thing crashing into earth and killing most of us.

If this guy figured out how to get to fucking Jupiter, mine this rock, and bring it back and I do not believe he is sharing it with the rest of us. DeBeers anyone?

Same thing with watches. There are many fakes that have to be opened to determine that they are fake. Why spend a ton of money for the genuine thing when nobody can tell, especially those who wear them to impress others. A cell phone keeps better time and has many more uses.

If everyone becomes rich then who will work for your shit which you supposed to buy for this cash?

3d printing will really be the go to manufacturing technique in space. Just raw materials in and finished products out.

aside from the devalued gold that has already been mentioned I also doubt the rich folks that will take control of it would spread around the wealth like some global communist utopia.
