There are lots of reasons to avoid processed foods. They’re often packed with sugar, fat and salt, and they tend to lack certain nutrients critical to health, like fiber. And now, new research suggests that some of the additives that extend the shelf life and improve the texture of these foods may have unintended side effects — not on our bodies directly, but on the human microbiome, the trillions of bacteria living in our guts.

These substances may selectively feed the more dangerous members of our microbial communities, causing illness and even death.

Consider the rise in deadly cases of clostridium difficile, or C. diff, a terrible infection of the gut. The bacterium tends to strike just after you’ve taken antibiotics to treat something else. Those antibiotics kill your native microbes, allowing C. diff to move in. Nearly half a million people develop the infection yearly, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and around 29,000 die, sometimes after long bouts of painful, bloody diarrhea. By one estimate, deaths linked to C. diff increased fivefold between 1999 and 2007.

One reason the bug has become more virulent is that it has evolved antibiotic resistance and is not as easily treatable. But some years ago, Robert Britton, a microbiologist at Baylor College of Medicine, discovered something else about C. diff: More virulent strains were outcompeting less virulent strains in the gut.

This is why I only drink water or alcohol.

They said red wine helps thin the blood or something so your arteries dont get clogged up with fat, and water you can never go wrong with water, as long as its clean and filtered with no germs.

The Gut Microbiome is the key to health, that good bacteria helps fight off infections and strengthens the immune system against bad invaders when the bad bacteria outnumber them its bad for your health, they constantly battle, thats why you gotta treat your good bacteria who are your allies right and feed your body with healthy real foods that help them fight the bad guys.

I automatically tune out anyone talking about "processed foods." All food is processed. What matters is to what degree and what is in the ingredient list.

They are talking about the processed foods that have been doused with harmful chemicals just so the food can look nice and stay fresh on the counters for prolonged periods of time these are not healthy, food should be from a natural state we are humans not robot.

Just eat fresh grown food feed that body

What chemicals?

"Processed foods" is a meaningless term.

I never eat processed lettuce. And to totally avoid GMO's(pretty sure they're airborne, right?) I only eat cheese before it's been processed. It doesn't taste like cheese, but I eat it.

Or too much. Too much water is bad.

Strains your kidneys, flushes nutrients.

What's in diet soda that's not good for the gastrointestinal tract?

When I hear "processed foods" I think of meats saturated with nitrates, or anything with high fructose corn syrup.

I realize this isn't the actual definition, and saying "processed foods" doesn't mean anything, but that's how I think about it.

This is why I only drink bacteria.

Good on you.

Shits gross, though.

I took 4 weeks of antibiotics back in January and just got out the hospital yesterday after a 2-week stretch. I guess my days are numbered

So you eat lettuce right off the head in the garden without washing it or cutting it?

Every food you eat is genetically modified. Everything has been cross bred to obtain the desired product whether it is a plant or an animal. Solar radiation also leads to changes in genes. Many genetic changes come from mistakes in copying genes as cells divide. It is why your body changes as it ages.

Yeah I just get down on all fours and have a go. Eating a sandwich is really hard but it's worth it because I'm totally saving the world like a got-damn hero.

Same I drink Kefir and Yakult probiotics Bacteria

It's even better if you leave it out in the sun for a day in a wooden bucket.

Good on you.
