GSP thought he was a solid striker, he also thought Matt Serra was a big can and decided he will play around for a round, to test his striking skills. He didn't go for a single take down, he thought this fight is too easy and a good opportunity to test his striking skills, maybe get a nice KO highlight.

He never fought on his feet again. This was the last time he played the striker. In the rematch he would take Serra down in the first 2 seconds and repeatedly take him down when Serra stood up.
This was the fight that turned GSP into the ufc wrestling control freak and according to many the most boring ufc champ to this day with 0 finishes.

GSP isn’t my favorite.

But your post is completely thoughtless and off base.

After GSP tapped to strikes he never wanted it to happen again

Going toe to toe with Bisping even past his prime is a good enough striking for me

Excellent thread i agree with much of the account written.

He definitely was less interested in a striking match after getting TKO’d. That being said, if you can win in a way that causes the least amount of damage, you should. Also as accomplished as GSP is inside the ring, i’m just as big of a fan, if not bigger, of him outside the ring. Just all class.

I could swear I saw him on his feet at least part of the time in fights after the first Serra fight -- I seem to recall him throwing a lot of jabs, and even knocking Bisping down with a hook. Might be my imagination though.

He was tapped once on the ground, and once because of strikes. Of the two, tapping to the armbar was probably worse, simply because a broken arm is less dangerous than punches to the head when you're already blacking out (ask any doctor if you doubt this).

But there's nothing wrong with tapping when you're done. In the military you're taught to surrender when you know you can't win, and then try to escape and fight again. And that's what real warriors (ie soldiers) do -- when one battle is lost you pull out and prepare to fight and win the next.

He outstruck some dudes pretty soundly at that point, but he was always mixing it up. He wasn't fighting great strikers really, mostly grapplers he could stuff so he looked better than he was. I don't think anyone knew how heavy Matts Hands were at that point. GSP is def a better technical striker, and improved his boxing immensely after that fight.

GSP did plenty of striking after the Serra fight. GSP outstruck diaz, BJ Penn, Dan Hardy, Jon Fitch, Jake Shields, Mike Bisping, Josh koscheck. This was impressive in it's own time.

GSP didn't strike very much with alves because he had such a large advantage over him on the ground and we saw Alves get taken down by Hughes and Karo just before. Also GSP took down Condit because condit had poor TDD and was dangerous on the feet.

Half of sherdog will KO granpa bisping. Plus granpa shut down his wrassling game, can you imagine.

Yup. The only reason we're all not making millions in the UFC like Bisping is because we recognize that posting on Sherdog about the UFC is more challenging and important than actually fighting in the UFC.

Guys remember that georges lost two rounds on the feet to jake sheilds. Let that sink in.

Gsp one of the sports enigma s. One of the goats on one hand but the context of most ( if not all) of his fights took an uneventful turn after he was " deer in the headlight-ed" after Serra. Greatest double leg- er in game along with his wrestling but too many 25 minute smotherfests for my liking. He was 25- 3 ( in my book , I gave him loss in rigg fight. fuck anyone who has a problem with that) and at end of the day - did beat who they put in front of him. As a " cage fighter" , I could NEVER consider him thee goat like most of his fans consider him.

Demolishing Matt Hughes let the world know that he was the man to beat at 170

Not only did he officially become the man with the belt, but it was a Jones vs Shogun type of massacre that set the tone for a legendary career

There're 2 fights combined that define GSP to me. That's GSP vs Koscheck and Hardy. He takes the path of least resistance. He strikes with grapplers and grapples with strikers.

Koscheck title fight was after both Serra fights too.

Grandpa Bisping did way better against GSP then I orginally thought he would.
