This provocative yet relatable term has floated through the zeitgeist of sports for some time. An ethereal concept which most will agree is valid but that level of validity exists on a spectrum.
I say all that to say,
Aljo never passed the eye test. As awesome as he has looked at times, he’s looked lost in there so many times.
This is what people seem to miss and they miss the magic of the sport when doing so.
no-one looked at aljo and thought they were witnessing greatness. It was all his record and current situation people were looking at. In fact we’ve seen a ton of questionable shit out of aljo. On this other hand, in that same division we have seen Cruz, Dillashaw and even Cejudo who have all shown greatness.
Guys that are eye test guys:
Anderson Silva
Tj
Khabib
Conor (kinda)
Joel
Jones (#1)
GSP
Mighty Mouse
Tom Aspinall (early I know but here’s a hot take)
DC
This isn’t a comprehensive list of UFC greats but it illustrates a picture of guys who spent most of their tenure in the UFC competing not only to win, but for all time greatness.
for clarity I will List a few greats who didn’t necessarily shock the eye test but turned out to be great:
Max
Volk
Porier
Usman
Whittaker
Oliviera
crazy game.
Who do you think does/doesn’t pass the eye test?
Is it a valid metric?
