Just going through this forum today it's starting to become pretty clear that Conor fans can't seem to understand what happened as Conor said "It is what it is" but instead are looking to find comfort through twitter posts and the likes.
I thought I'll try and clear things up.
The reality is that with his fight with Diaz he was tested on many fronts and on many of those fronts he failed. His striking was great, as we already knew and was landing hard on Diaz but the reality is that against some opponents (especially the bigger ones) just having good striking isn't going to be enough. Simply to complete at the elite level and to be able to challenge and beat a diverse range of contenders you need more than just good striking.
His cardio was way off, His defense was bad, He doesn't have other dimensions to his game and Heart is questionable.I think he showed some heart to stay alive for so long but in the end he was taken to a crazy pace and was at a point of no return. He could have either been knocked out or subbed, I think he did a smart thing to save punishment (remember GSP once tapped to strikes) but in the end his heart wasn't as big as his mouth so he's going to cop shit for that.
Him talking about efficiency as the main issue got me thinking about if being more efficient will help with what he failed and if it will allow him to compete at the elite level consistently at LW. I personally think his thinking on this is wrong.
Consider he was in a WOW / Diablo Character...Having a more efficient approach means he has a lower DPS, and higher Health Regen... He still has the same overall health though, as there's only so much he can give or take.
Efficiency should compliment his game and not be the answer.
To explain my thinking:
Part of being more efficient is to be less active. To stand and pick and choose your shots better, in turn this means longer drawn out fights, which doesn't favor Conor against the Elite of the LW's who can take his shots better and have more time to enforce their style of fighting on him.. All while Conor's draining health... when it gets into the later rounds and his energy has been been depleted then his hands are no longer a threat, what does he have left?
Lets consider that he was more efficient with Diaz and where he would have been at in the middle of the 2nd round. It would simply have meant that he would have dished out less damage to Diaz in exchange for more cardio. Now once Diaz starts pouring it on you are forced to work, your cardio is tested and if it's not up to par being efficient in the previous round doesn't mean as much. Cardio > Efficiency. Having 5 round cardio at a high pace means you are there in the 5th round regardless of what happened before that. Depending on efficiency in a round 5 fight is as Diaz will say (You will hope) You will hope you were able to be efficient.
To rely on being efficient not to gas in a fight has a strong element of luck in it:
You need to hope that what you throw does land, this is on your opponent as much as you, if you are throwing great and what you will consider efficient blow but the opponent is avoiding them, you need to continue to throw and if you've placed efficiency in front of cardio then you're in trouble.
Against the wrestler, being efficient (less active) means you are allowing your opponent more time to catch you and to take you down, all while dishing out as much less damage. TDD > Efficiency
I think he needs to add something more to his game, he has a great base with his hands and it brought him to the party but to stay on top he needs to understand that you need more than good striking when fighting the LW's.
