When Diego first left UF 1 he seemed to be arguably more skilled than he is today. I'm wondering how training around and with the best of the best at Jackson's MMA this could have happened.

I will always be a fan of the nightmare... maybe it was the BJ Penn fight that in all honesty should've been stopped that has changed him.

though entertaining Diego's Rocky Balboa style wont serve him well as he ages

thoughts?

I'm still curious as to what the question is.

He fell in love with his substandard striking and survived on chin and durability, instead of focusing in on the thing he had always excelled at, his grappling.

he's not the sharpest knife in the drawer, its hard to know what you need to work on when you run face first into punches as much as he does

although not running face first into punches wouldve been the place to start if I was him

He looked really skilled back in the day on TUF. His grappling was really good, he just fell in love with banging it out. Unfortunately he has no chin left.

His wrestling / grappling was definitely better, or way more used than it's been in the latter half of his career.

He was a beast grappler back in the day. Even took it to Nick Diaz on the ground.

His grappling was sick but his takedowns weren't very good. I guess he discovered that he had an ungodly ability to take punishment, and that served him well over the years. But it caught up with him, like it always does for fighters, and unfortunately I think he will probably go down as a sad story of the sport.

He realized he could make a lot more money by being one of those stand and bang guys. He's literally hunting for fight of the night like every single time he gets in there.

Before he became a stand and banger.....

Diego was an absolute beast. Crazy TDs and grappling game.

Before that BJ beatdown, he had only lost a split to Fitch (impressive) and a UD against Kos.

His fights vs. Karo and Nick Diaz are so dope to watch. People forget Diego had some seriously slick BJJ.

Diego was a serious grappler.

Then one day he KO’d Diesel Riggs and suddenly he thought he was a boxer. Very frustrating to watch him, as he used to be such a beast on the ground.

The 3 fights featuring those 3 guys against each other are probably my favourite mma fights of all time.

Sanchez almost fought Thiago Alves before moving to LW. Could you imagine the pre-USADA Alves swinging away at Diego’s cement-coconut that is also known as his head?
