Economy The Capitalism Crumble

Vegas was fun for a bit.
Kind of overpriced and overrated now.

This has nothing to do with capitalism.

If you want to tie capitalism into it, now people will still spend money, they are just going to spend it elsewhere.

It has everything to do with capitalism. Capitalism is not merely where people spend their money. Vegas is not the only model provided for the failure of this system. But hey we can always oversimplify as an excuse to keep doing the same thing we're doing despite the problems that arent being solved.

A system that increases wealth gap by design can only be unstable and has to crash at some point.
The regular americans have no idea how much they get screwed by their ruling class.

Econ 101 tells us there is no long term profit in an unregulated free market economy.

All gains are eventually lost. Shareholders deal with this reality by trying to maximize short term profit.

Governments are SUPPOSED to deal with this reality by regulating a mostly free market to ensure stable long term profit.

But we currently have a government helmed by a "successful businessman" who has a history of running his businesses into the ground and deriving most of his long term profits from fraud. And he appears to think that deregulating the market, along with mismanaging it, is best for the economy.

This leaves us with two potential conclusions:

1) it's all pump and dumps and a weakened economy is the goal so his donors can buy up resources and farmland on the cheap during a depression

or

2) he's so stupid he actually thought the trade wars and deregulation would be good for our economy

You know, this sounds a lot like what the communist apologists would say when their ideology was criticized - it's totally not the fault of the system, it's because people did communism wrong, they were bad people, you don't understand the system, or they weren't really communists.

No judgment, just an observation.

Eh, it can sound however does to your ears. The example works for Communism as well. I don't think Communism is some explicitly evil ideology. I love that everyone automatically takes sides. I mean, I don't see anyone making constant threads about their criticisms of Communism. I guess cause that idea failed a while back. Everyone's just frothing at the mouth doomers. If you got something better, cough it up please. I'm no partisan.

Lol, I'd respond to your post above this one but in this one you are essentially addressing me as one would a misguided child. Which that's your prerogative. You keep feeling the need to explain capitalism to me over and over again because you cannot account for its failures, nor for how it almost invariably ends up being what you say it's not.

Bye the way if I were angry, this conversation would sound almost exactly like this:

That's throwing anger into the mix. This isnt anger, this is disappointment. And just like the more vehement poster I responded to before, you want me to blame the Government and not the people who used their capital to exploit the holes in the system BY capturing Government. I blame all of it. Because these systems are people, they are wanted by people. You want to trust the system that allows this, I don't anymore because I can detail how almost everything I have to pay money into, be it Government or private, is a scam and how I am now at the point of choosing the preferable scam. We all are, and we know we are.

Dude, you are awfully defensive of me just trying to make empirical observations about capitalism, inherent hierarchies, and looking at it objectively. You just sound like you have an agenda, to be honest. That's fine, I realize now that my time is better suited elsewhere. You came on here to discuss a topic, took criticism, and decided to fold into a bunch of hateful pseudo-intellectual discourse. I tried to be kind about it and hold some sort of dialogue but you are insistent on brow beating my opinions. So, yeah. I'm out. You obviously don't want discussion, you want a reinforcement chamber.

Yes, capitalism has done bad things. Welcome to world history where very ideology is bent to the will of those at power. I would argue the same about communism. Could it work? Probably, yeah. Will it? No, because you will always have those who seek money - and power.

Have a nice evening, gents.

Projection fallacy.

It was you who started to be more critical of me than any positions or perspectives I've shared. Its there for everyone to read, the longer I went not agreeing with you, the more you talked about me. Otherwise your contention was that this economic decay that is spreading in our Country is the fault of one of two things:

1) The Gubment

2) We are doing capitalism wrong.

Except there were times in this Country where markets were more free, it was demonstrably worse. Each time de-regulation happens exploitive measures from the capitalist class increase, not decrease. I'm not going to apologize for not buying what you're selling, guess that's the marketplace of ideas working its magic. Your response to that is this juvenile accusatory nonsense reminding me of the very nice Pastor who would calmly and almost kindly tell my gay Cousin that he is in store for eternal damnation.

I dont think I ever concealed the fact that I'm not a believer who has lost my faith, something always seemed fishy about the "capitalism" I was born into, and have experienced numerous economic crises during. This thread intention was very clearly to express critique of the system. I just think it's a bad idea. And the more people attempt to critique my intent when I say so rather than defending their position coherently, the worse I think the idea actually is.

You're correct and it is both.
The government is utterly stupid and clueless about economy (like Milei).
And the top donors know how to exploit hurtful economic situations to divert even more wealth and power upward. We've seen it happen during the COVID crisis.

A big city built in a desert that only exists as it is because of loose regulations on gambling and adult entertainment and being a tax haven.

It happened during the Great Depression as well. The wealthy bought sh*t up for pennies on the dollar. They were just still alright with the social safety nets being robust because the Country was still systemically racist and sexist. Which meant the elite class was never threatened. So instead we fantasized about people overcoming it:

I think I mentioned it before but in the wake of this absolute American classic, Capra got thousands of angry letters from people. Angry because nothing bad happened to the capitalist. He wasnt punished for his exploitive behavior in the story.

Was watching this MPU video about Starbucks earlier:

So essentially Starbucks turned to treating employees and customers like sh*t in every way and making stores less welcoming, while at the same time charging more for everything.

Sounds like a recipe for success for a company once known for being pleasant community places where spending money wasnt a requirement to exist in the space.

That tends to happen across lots of businesses . Build up customer loyalty with good service and products, then start scaling back hoping the customers are too loyal to care.

Was just talking about this the other day. It appears the term "enshittification" has been coined for this esp in the online world.

More and more youtube videos are popping up on the topic.

Not long before big business will figure out a way to disqualify such videos from the algorithms.

It's a byproduct of fiduciary responsibility and shareholder economics. These notions dont put quality or service as the centeal focus, they put profit margins. It changes to focus from a sturdy loyal workforce who do quality work, to an overpaid CEO who can find the most egregious ways to pinch pennies. And they almost always start with customer perks and labor. Immediately after that comes ways to sell a worse product for higher prices.

Part of me wonders sometimes to if they just prefer to burn the house down rather than let unions increasingly in the door. Like if the unions get formed, they just intentionally make shit decisions and hope they can open up again under a different name or deliberately make it a less inviting place to work LOL.

I almost laughed at this comment but quickly realized you're not really joking. They'll probably tie it into defamation or some such shit.

That's when we start making parodies and claiming 1st Amendment rights. There's a number of folks who've won big against the corporate shitbags by doing this.

yeah I have used a couple of pretty mid-level companies that became more popular and pretty much immediately cut their quality, noticeably so.

They do, but they don't blame themselves. They blame their made-up obligation:

You're assuming there will still be a Constitution

It was pretty interesting to see that Infographics was pretty much thinking along these same lines:
