The BJ in his prime according to Joe Rogan

Pretty sure it's 2003-2010

That's a 7 year stretch with his only losses being 3. 1 vs a LHW all time great in Lyoto, 2 to the WW goat GSP, 1 against the WW #2 which he ended up beating 2/3 times.

keep in mind WW is a 15 lb jump and BJ was a small LW to begin with. 1 of thoe losses to GSP (ww goat) was very competitive.

Considering all the context yes prime BJ easily could be the #1 LW in any era.

How would Khabib or any of his contemporaries do vs GSP or Hughes?
Khabib would walk through Hughes, GSP would be a coin toss.

BJ was phenomenally talented. In terms of skillset, he was way ahead of his time. He was also a true warrior, who fought everyone and anyone, regardless of weight class. I mean he was a small LW who fought at all weight classes up to LHW.

He let himself down when he got older and the game caught up with him, with his laziness and lack of work ethic, which is a shame. Jumping out of swimming pools is not a training camp.

Are you going out of your way to diminish him or what his legacy should be? Dude was an absolute unit. I will never understand why people make so many anti BJ threads on this forum.

Can you imagine if he wasn't such a lazy shithead?
The curse of having yesmen.
BJ had the best peak of a prime you can ask for even with a pot belly
BJ is the size of a FW. He's like 5'8--tops--and over 20% bodyfat at like 168 lbs. He could probably even make BW if his life depended on it, but I don't think that'd be his optimal size.

I don't believe BJ beats top WW's or top grappling LW's today, but I'd seriously give him a chance against smaller strikers at LW like DP, Justin, and even Fiziev. I think taller LW's like JT or Hooker are just too long (if he can't get them to the ground).

I honestly believe prime BJ is competitive at FW today. At worst 10-15 range. At best, fringe top five but could beat any opponent on the right night.

With all do respect, could you imagine Khabib fighting at WW--let alone two divisions up at MW?
That prime BJ on the Dolce diet looked like he was committing assaults against LWs at the time,l.
Kabob wouldn't fight an opponent he doesn't have lbs on, proved that himself.

BJ would be outsized today. He was already tiny for a LW. Skill wise he is good but when you look at todays guys, they were 3 weight classes above what they were in his days. I doubt a 5ft6 BJ would be top today but you never know.

Khabib would walk through Hughes, GSP would be a coin toss.
If Khabib thought he could have been the best WW, he would have made the attempt. He damn near killed himself to make 155 so that tells you all you need to know about his thoughts about the WW division, filled with a bunch of legitimate wrestlers who used their wrestling and weren't just strikers.

GSP 50-45s Khabib all day. No takedowns, face jabbed all night long. 2013 Hendricks would have beat Khabib as well.

Lol. He should have moved up, like Islam wants to now and everyone saying he shouldn't be allowed?

I’m currently listening to the podcast with Sean z Brady and Rogan says something like. People forget how good BJ was, when BJ was in his prime he was a motherfucker I would put that BJ against any 155er ever.

Now what is this prime era? Cause the longest win streak he has had at LW was 3, so is he talking about his debut streak of winning the LW belt and knocking out 3 dudes before losing to Jens Pulver? Or is it the 6 fight steak with one draw right after that fight that culminated with him beating Matt Hughes for the welterweight belt?

Cause after he leaves for Japan and comes back he gets lapped by GSP and Hughes so his prime had to have been within his first 3 years of the UFC between 2001-2004 and BJ age in those year would have been 23 to 26 years. That’s a young ass prime if anything he was no where near his prime. If he had taken the sport as seriously as GSP he could have been the GOAT
I didn't forget how good he was. He's a very unlikable fellow and that makes people tend to want to celebrate at their downfall like rousey. It's just what people do. I used to do the same thing.

Who the hell listens to Joe Rogan???

I get all my goofy manlet news from Conor.

Their first fight was very close and went to a split decision. The rematch was marred by GSP's ridiculous cheating.

Lolz

And good thing too, since it let to the GOAT Ms Paint:

I do think Islam vs GSP would be a true 50/50 fight.
About the same size, decent striking exchanges, good grappling exchanges.

He would obliterate BJ and Hughes.

I think BJ was in his absolute prime around the time he first beat Hughes and especially when he beat Gomi.

His best run was with the LW title but I do feel he'd become a bit more limited as a fighter by that point, more an anti grappler counter fighter.

I think GSP in the rematch and Edgar had an easier time with him than they would have the earlier BJ who would have gone after them more standing and on the ground.

No one has ever said Islam shouldn't be allowed to move up to WW and you know it lol
Feel free to check every single thread suggesting it. The most generous suggestion is that he should be the first champ in UFC history to be stripped to go start from the bottom at WW.

Stripped if he wants to go to WW, sure. Start at the bottom? No.

Get an immediate WW title shot? No. Give him a top5 and if he wins, sure why not?

This free titleshot in a division above while barely defending your own title is beyond ridiculous.

Go ahead and list all the other champs who got stripped to go fight non-title fights. I'll wait.

we've come to a point where the new fans, in there ever growing lack of respect to what got the sport to where it is, constantly ignore watching old footage, watching the greats, lack any sort of ability to watch older fights in the context of this was where it was at, and we constantly get stupid ass questions, disrespect to the older generations. BJ is the LW GOAT 100%. what he did, was unfathomable, and no modern day LW would ever have the guts, the balls, the opportunity, to test themselves as he once did, across multiple orgs, multiple weight classes, and did pretty damn well too. i only take solace in the fact, that these morons will have the same thing happen to them too. maybe then they will get it. WAR BJ PENN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! UWAE MAU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! KE O KA AINA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IKA PONO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! O, HAVAIII!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
