I've talked about my idea of an MMA scoring system that can work on the ten-point-must system before. It's been met with some supporters, some detractors, and ... well, mostly apathy. Because it's probably not that interesting.

But still! I've wanted to put it to the test. I'm not sold on the system and would like to open it up for discussion. I will thus be doing real-time scoring of the last handful of fights on this card.

The Bard's Scoring System, short version:

10-10: No clear winner, or the round was too inactive to award a point
10-9: Very close round, but with a winner and at least fair output
10-8: Clear round winner
10-7: Clear round winner with significant damage, one-sided round even if not dominant
10-6: Clear round winner, significant damage, dominant round
10-5: Absolutely dominant round, excessive damage, similar to some 10-7 rounds under typical scoring

Fight one: Dariush v. Chiesa

Round 1: 10-8 Dariush
Round 2: Submission Win for Chiesa

Swanson / Dias

Round 1: Dias 10-9 (although a reasonable judge could score it 10-10, pretty much a toss-up on which way to go)

Swanson / Dias

Round 1: Dias 10-9 (although a reasonable judge could score it 10-10, pretty much a toss-up on which way to go)
Round 2: Swanson 10-8

Round 2: Swanson 10-8
Round 3: Swanson 10-8 (fairly close to a 10-7)

Decision: Swanson 29-26

Round 3: Swanson 10-8

Commentary: Competitive fight, but not close. Swanson wins this one easily. Final score of 29-26 accurately reflects the fighter's performanes; traditional MMA scoring of 29-28, which is often a toss-up score, is a less accurate historical record for the fight's results.

Horcher / Nurmagomedov

Round 1: 10-7 Nurmagomedov

Horcher / Nurmagomedov

Round 1: 10-7 Nurmagomedov
Round 2: TKO Win for Nurmagomedov; The Bard had the round scored 10-6 until the stoppage.

Horcher / Nurmagomedov

Round 2: TKO Win for Nurmagomedov; The Bard had the round scored 10-6 until the stoppage.
Commentary: Certainly a fight that wouldn't be controversial under any scoring system. Had it gone to Round 3, Horcher would have been down 20-13 and would have had to stop the fight to win. I think 20-13 is a good representation of how that fight was going.

Torres / Namajunes

Round 1: Torres 10-8 (could reasonably be scored 10-9, but Rose didn't do much with the TD and Torres landed some bombs)

Torres / Namajunes

Round 1: Torres 10-8 (could reasonably be scored 10-9, but Rose didn't do much with the TD and Torres landed some bombs)
Round 2: Namajunes 10-8 (I lost the middle 1.5 - 2 minutes of this fight to tuck my daughter into bed, so fill me in if I am wrong)

This one is actually a close fight. I scored it a draw under the bard system

10-8 Torres
10-10
10-8 najumas

I feel it will be a SD coming IRL

Torres / Namajunes

Round 1: Torres 10-8 (could reasonably be scored 10-9, but Rose didn't do much with the TD and Torres landed some bombs)
Round 2: Namajunes 10-8 (I lost the middle 1.5 - 2 minutes of this fight to tuck my daughter into bed, so fill me in if I am wrong)
Round 3: Namajunes 10-9 (could be 10-10)

Decision: Namajunes 28 - 27 (reasonable alternate outcome is 28-28 Draw, also reasonable to score it 28-26 Namajunes).
