You're not allowed to hold the head through a knee to the face from the Muay Thai clinch, you have to let go at contact, iirc. It was decided it does too much damage.

But I saw Karolina Kowalkiewicz holding that clinch while kneeing Clark.

I think Overeem saw it too, because he did it to Arlovski.

It wasn't a big shot, and Overeem let go of the clinch a moment later, but in neither case did the ref intervene.

Am I wrong or did the ref drop the ball?

I don't even believe it is illegal, both in muay thai and mma to be honest.. never heard of that rule.

Edit: remember Silva - Franklin? Perfectly ok imo.

You're thinking of K-1/kickboxing. They introduced that rule and limit clinch fighting. In traditional muay thai and MMA, there is no restriction on clinching.

Attacking an opponent while holding a neck of an opponent with both hands is considered a foul technique. A fighter is allowed to attack momentarily when grabbing his opponent with one hand. Referee may call a brake during a match if the one handed grab does not lead to an effective attack, and may give a caution or a warning if these ineffective single grabbing continues and or if such actions cause deadlock.

Passive holding or clinching is prohibited. However, the referee can permit a fighter holding or grabbing his opponent with one hand only when it is accompanied by an authorized attack. A caution and a warning may be given to a fighter even when he is holding with one hand if referee considers this single hand grab or clinch is causing a deadlock or that fighter is trying to avoid attacks.

A rule in K-1 and kickboxing, NOT MMA.

No that's not a rule. They restricted it in K1/Glory so you could only use one hand, but in mma you can do whatever you want.

This. There are SO many differences between K1 and Muay Thai.. the clinch is a core position of MT.

Tell that to Rich Franklin lmao

Commission should overturn and give Arlovski W or NC.

The rule change was after that.

Unless I'm confused, but I really don't think I am.

you are more than confused, you are literally creating fiction lol

I heard and always believed k1 made this change because overeem landed a knee on some guy from the plum and put him in a coma? Truth to this?

could be Rogan said it talking about K-1 but I don't think so.

Why did everyone stop using it, then? I've noticed people releasing the head at contact many times recently.

Used to see it all the time in Pride, Wanderlei destroying Rumble with it, but no one uses it anymore?

Was not aware of that rule.
I may well be wrong, happy to admit it if I am. But when was the last time someone in the UFC held a Thai clinch like Anderson used to? Why did he stop using that move?

Well with all respect.. the burden of proof is on you imo.. so a link to said rule would be nice ;)
I'll try to Google it. I was hoping sometime know knows better would inform me, and seemingly I'm wrong. No problem admitting I'm wrong!
