I heard Bas say on Inside MMA, that he felt tapping to strikes was one of the worst ways to get a bad reputation among fellow fighters. Has this happened in any big fights you can recall?

I don't see the issue with it...someone is about to break your arm and you tap from the pain because you know its over. Someone is bashing your head in and you're exhausted and know it's over so you tap...then again I'm also a beta male so what do I know?

Serra vs GSP is probably the #1 example of a fighter getting shit for tapping to strikes.

Tito and Shogun also got shit on for tapping but GSP imo has received the most hate for it.

When did Tito tap to strikes?

Ricco/Handy
Frank/Tito
Arona/Reem

Way i see it if u take a prolonged beating and are clearly just doing nothing but taking damage or if u sustained an injury (like a broken jaw or something), theres nothing wrong with it.

However if u tap in the 1st round in the first sign of adversity like GSP did thats a problem and GSP rightfully had his heart questioned for years.

I agree. GSP said it best in interviews where he knew he was done, and didn't want to risk further brain trauma so he could fight sooner and stronger another day.

If you think about it, choke submissions are situations where not tapping is (pretty much) completely safe, but nobody ever shits on fighters for tapping to chokes. But god forbid if a fighter wants to preserve the health of his brain when he knows he's done, then he is a pussy.

I remember the Arona/Reem tap

Arona actually punched him in the eye and you could see something happened and Reem tapped right away. I don't see that much harm in tapping to strikes, prolongs the career.

It's one of the things I like least about discussions on Sherdog, that a fighter is permanently bitchmade if he taps to strikes once in his life.

I train MMA...I'm a white belt at every thing pretty much except boxing and let me tell you..when we 'light' train and I'm exhausted and hurt and my sparring partner gets in full mount and starts simulating punches I cant even breathe and tap out quickly if he gets a submission.

Its so easy to sit there on the couch and go I just dont get how this legendary fighter just tapped to that but once you train even as minimal as me it's a light bulb moment on how ridiculously difficult fighting is. It's also why I cracked up for years when ESPN and Sports Illustrated kept calling Tiger Woods the best 'athlete' in the world..LMAO please

It's a weird one because a lot of fighters think it is a bitch move to tap to strikes, not just keyboard warriors. It's one of the reasons BJ's loss to GSP was so humiliating for him, because prior to the fight he called GSP a bitch for tapping to Serra

I thought the saying was you're a bitch if you're not hurt and tap to it to avoid getting hurt. In the case of GSP V Serra...GSP was freaking gone man. He got hit a ton and even more so in the back of the head imho and looked out.
My coach is a black belt in BJJ and says he taps out nearly immediately when an advanced fighter gets his ankle...says its frowned upon in the community but the experienced guys can easily tear your ligaments in seconds.

Bas talks alot of shit, he would get his ass kicked in his prime by a journeyman fighter today.

I love Bas, but there is absolutely no shame in & nothing wrong with tapping to strikes.

In fact, it is intelligently defending yourself.

If you can fight back, fight back; however if you are all done, racking up more brain damage just to seem more 'manly' to anyone is just plain stupid.

It's tapout-shirt mentality.

Pat Barry's leg kicks made Dan Evensen tap -- pretty badass.

I don't see a problem with tapping to strikes. If you know you're done before the ref does, why take unnecessary damage?
