Iran never had any insurgency to deal with and as a theocratic regime they are hardly likely to face one from secularists or democrats. The Syrian rebellion was hijacked by Islamist jihadi's, there is your defeat right there. The only backers these savages have is the bipolar Saudi Kingdom which has meant the conflict is now about regional supremacy (Iran vs Saudi) not Syria.
