Listen to the Radio Report: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p04txtsm
Summary:
1. Trump watched Ami Horowitz's Sweden Documentary on Fox News
2. The documentary suggests that rape in Sweden has exploded since the recent immigration influx
3. The documentary calls Sweden "The Rape Capital of Europe" citing a 2012 BBC article by Ruth Alexander (she is on this report)
4. The 2012 article really said the OPPOSITE - it said it was WRONG to call Sweden the rape capital of Europe
The Original Article:
4.1. In 2012 Swedish Rape was in the news because of Julian Assange. His supporters were claiming rape wasn't the real issue on why he was being pursued, but it was a multi-government plot to extradite him to America
4.2. Naomi Wolf was on BBC Newsnight and said Sweden had the highest rate of Rape in Europe and the lowest rate of Prosecution (2012)
4.3. She contended that Sweden was usually lax in prosecuting rapists compared to their unusually active way of pursing Assange
4.4. In 2012 the rape rate in Sweden was listed as 63 per 100,000 (second highest in the world, highest in Europe)
- This is 3x Norway, 2x USA, and more than 30x India (which recorded 2 per 100,000)
4.5. Sweden is NOT more dangerous than these other countries. WHY? Police records can't be directly compared - the systems are not comparable (just look at USA vs India stats!)
4.6. Sweden had the ambition to record every sexually violent act separately to make them visible in statistics, which isn't true for other countries
example: when wives report their husbands EACH REPORT is now counted, which could be more than 300 reports in a year, unlike other countries where they are grouped as 1 report
4.7. Sweden in 2004: 2200 reported rape cases, Sweden in 2011: 6000 reported cases
- This increase was due to a change of attitudes - more people are willing to go to the police, not due to a crime explosion
- Legal Reform in Sweden in 2005: made legal definition of Rape much wider
example: when a victim was asleep or intoxicated their cases were now included in the rape figures, previously they were in a different category of crime
Original Article Conclusion:
4.8. If you look at UN figures, Sweden comes up very high, but it isn't because of immigration
- It is related to how they calculate figures and the culture of reporting
- 63 countries didn't report ANY rape figures ( Botswana had 93 per 100,000 )
Back to the Documentary and why it is Wrong:
5. Over the last 5 years Sweden has taken in more immigrants
(not more than Germany, but proportionally more based on their population)
6. From 2012 to 2016 the Swedish Rape rate fell from 63 to 62 per 100,000 people
(some years up, some years down)
7. The rape rate increased sharply 5 YEARS BEFORE the immigrant influx due to the
items described in the original article above, but HAS NOT CHANGED due to immigrants
