I'll explain how something like this can come about.

Swedish law divides crimes into ordinary and serious and by definition duration plays into the categorization. The threshold for deportation is also a minimum 4 year sentence and this guy served 3 years for crime. In this case the court read a strict interpretation of the law and not one based on personal affinity. Deportation courts are also a separate legal entity from criminal courts and not part of the punishment system. Their role is to determine if the person has met the criteria of being a severe threat to society and they determined according to a direct interpretation of the law he had not.

If you are confused how they interpret the severity by duration it is like person A stabbing someone while person B stabs someone and rotates the knife to cause prolonged suffering. Person A committed what is known in swedish law as an ordinary crime and get 3 years in prison no deportation, person B committed a severe crime gets 5 years in prison is considered a threat ro society and likely to be deported.

In case of rape it sounds absurd but that's probably how it went down. The threshold for deportation is pretty high. It's likely cases like this will see that changed.
