I had to re-read this article because it seemed ridiculous.

Apparently, the crown jewels were just on display in a glass box in a cathedral with nobody guarding it other than a burglar alarm. On the upside, the items are pretty hard to fence but, if profit is key, melt price and loose stones will fetch a decent amount. Then again, there could be some very rich and nefarious people who would love to have them as a trophy.
