I once tried complimenting someone's huge houseplant using that joke about the Japanese soldier that was hiding the jungle and didn't know the war was over -- yeah, nothing. If anything they thought I got a little racist. I was like yeah, the Japanese are small, and racist, but I don't "got one, technically." Just dug myself deeper.
