There is liability if someone were to get sick from any of that food. The people may be hungry but let one of them get sick and they would sue right away.

If there are so many hungry and starving people up there they should stop their nightly temper tantrums and work to help each other.

Its not a donation.

These responses make me lose faith in humanity. This is just yet another sign that America is collapsing, complete disregard for the well-being of other Americans. I always grew up thinking that people in the states cared for one another but once I became older I realized this hyper individualistic attitude in America is so destructive. The pandemic really showed peoples' true colors and in some ways I'm thankful for it because it made me realize who is worth keeping around as a friend. There shouldn't be anyone supporting this. Not in a country as wealthy as America

Blame the legal cartel, if control was less, and people took more responsibility, then we wouldn’t have to worry about liability in situations like these..The Dumpster is open, eat at your own risk..But Noooo, let’s make it a legal thing..LOL

A while back a Second Cup shop in my town started pouring bleach on their left over-croissants, bagels and muffins before bagging them and throwing them out because people were breaking the locks on the dumpster to get at them.

How would Fred Meyer be liable when they are not handing the food out?

If I want to give them the benefit of the doubt, they fear liability if someone gets sick or injured from dumpster diving on thier property and consuming discarded food?

Or is it more likely they just don't like the optics of dozens of undesirables hanging around thier store?

Either way @Andy Capp posted this in another thread that seems like a good solution going forward.

If I recall correctly, France has passed a law barring produce sellers from throwing away anything edible.

Yes, turns out that in fact I do,
French Food Waste Law Changing How Grocery Stores Approach Excess Food

"Opening a giant fridge, Dos Santos shows what else the store is giving away – yogurt, pizza, fresh fruits and vegetables, and cheese.

But giving leftover food to charity is no longer just an act of goodwill. It's a requirement under a 2016 law that bans grocery stores from throwing away edible food."

We obviously need such a law in the US and Canada.

Do they really need to pour bleach on anything when your location says nocturne?
Also this being america im thinking there would be some legal loophole to get sued to bolivia if people get sick if you just let them have this food but I really have 0 clue, it just sounds very american.
On a happier note in the town i live in in norway a local church community gets the food thats about to expire from all the local food store chains and freeze it, then people in need can come get it if they want it. The only price you pay is getting an earful of gospel :)

A country that has such a vast amount of multiculturalism, needs a uniting culture to help everyone have a sense of camaraderie.
