SUMO - 2021 Natsu Basho (May 9th - May 23rd)

glad to see Wakatakakage get his winning record. also really hoping Hoshoryu can win the last couple days to end with his 8 wins too.

good win for Endo against Takakeisho, and Terunofuji looked completely in charge against Ichinojo. potential yusho tomorrow.

What a bout Terunofuji vs. Endo. A marvel to watch Endo show his technical prowess. Was a deserved win and makes this really a
fantastic basho.

Juryo and Makuuchi with a real final bout for it all. Chiyonoo vs. Ura and Teru vs. Takakkeisho.

Lets hope Teru and Ura go for the win. They both really deserve it after their performances.

wow, yeah that throw from Endo was amazing. when he's on he can look really good, and that was a tremendous display of agility, balance, and use of leverage. rooting for Terunofuji and hopefully he'll get it done on the final day, but that was great from Endo and it keeps the championship up in the air until the final match.

nice win from Onosho as well, against fellow pusher-thruster Daieisho. i think Daieisho may have been injured this tournament though, a few of the commentators have talked about it throughout the tournament, but he's going for a lot more pulling.

I think takayasu has secured east sekiwake position for the upcoming Nagoya basho. West sekiwake awaits to be filled by either another Philippino mischief mitakeumi or wakatakakage depending on how they end their basho.

What's harder to predict is who's gonna be the next komusubi. If meisei loses today and endo wins, it's possible for endo to reach sanyaku in one giant step.

Tokushoryu and ura are guaranteed to reenter makuuchi next basho and chiyonoo is making his debut as long as they don't make trouble and China doesn't invade Okinawa.

It's also remarkable that we're continuing to watch oho, grandson of taiho moving up the ladder gloriously. It won't be too long till he reaches top devision, I reckon. His daddy's youtube channel never stops providing controversy for the ozumo fans. Dad (former sekiwake takatoriki) just revealed in the recent video that the majority of hakuho's yushos has been rigged. I'm not sure how far oho is being affected by his dad's allegations.

yeah, i feel like coming up with the sanyaku ranks for the next tournament will be pretty tough.

Takayasu as East Sekiwake is a given, but if Mitakeumi ends at 9-6 and Wakatakakage ends at 10-5 would Wakatakakage leapfrog Mitakeumi and end as West Sekiwake? that feels awkward to me and i think Mitakeumi would feel hard done by that. i'd guess regardless of his final day Mitakeumi will end up as West Sekiwake and if he gets his 10th win Wakatakakage could get East Sekiwake 2. Wakatakakage losing on the last day makes it much easier, and he would probably go up to East Komosubi and Meisei world bump up to West Komosubi. but with nobody else in the upper maegashira ranks looking like getting sanyaku promotion, Endo could benefit and get that big promotion to Komosubi too.

feel like it'll be a big final day for a lot of these guys.

hahaha yeah, i respect Takatoriki a lot for his matches and he was a lot of fun but i don't put too much stock in the stuff he says on youtube. i'm sure there's a grain of truth in the outrageous claims he makes, but he just seems like the classic "back in my day..." kind of guy. and it's tangential but i think his role in the baseball gambling scandal is pretty disappointing, as is the way he seemed to have treated Kotomitsuki as a kind of ATM to take money out of to pay off gambling debts.

I think we can all agree that Asanoyama's removal was the best thing to happen to Takakeisho. Asa has never been able to beat Terunofuji and would've kept the gap between Teru and Keisho a wide one.

Right. Because of something a Japanese author Tsutsui Yasutaka tweeted about him, I had confusingly assumed Mitakeumi was 8-6. He's actually 9-5 and still able to score 10 wins in the end. Wakatakakage being the 3rd sekiwake would be a nice idea but most likely he'll improve his ranking to komusubi.

Greetings to Ura for winning Juryo. Will be interesting to see him back in Makuchi but I will always be worried about him getting the next injury.

Akua with the mighty bitchslap of the basho<Lmaoo>
Kaisei impressed me this basho with his calm but no going back demeanor. Good win today and I hope he can stay in Makuuchi for 2021 and then maybe retire. Would not like to seem him get handed down slowly to Makushita at some point.

Terutsoyshi. As much as I dislike the guy he is up there as one of the most technical rikishi ever. To throw 190kg Aoyama like that. Wow! Very very impressive. Would love to see what guys like him and Enho could accomplish in Judo.

Teru vs Takakeisho lived up to it 100% . Great win for Takakeisho only for Teru coming back strong and winning this basho that he well deserved. Overall this was Yokozuna sumo from Teru.

It was a fantastic basho with the best possible outcome

Lets hope Hakuho comes back next basho and Teru can fight him for Yokozuna promotion.

Special Prizes:
No Outstanding performance or Fighting Spirit Don't know why

Technique goes to Endo and Wakatakakage

Question:
Obviously Terunofuji is obviously on a Yokozuna run going into the July Basho.

Now, If in July we have similar results on the final day but reverse results. Takakeisho loses the main match but wins a playoff could we see Takakeisho get promoted? This would obviously be similar to Kakuryu and Kisenosato being promoted with a Jun yusho and a yusho.

Is it possible in this situation that both could be promoted to Yokozuna? Both are on a far better streak in Basho than either Kisenosato or Kakuryu when they were promoted.

For both rikishis to be promoted to yokozuna, play-off needs to be fought when final scores tie at 14-1.

For terunofuji to be promoted, he really needs 13 wins minimum given a play-off loss. 13 wins runner-up without playoff could be tough to call. 14 wins will make a new yokozuna from Mongolia regardless.

The other possibility where takakeisho finishes honbasho 14-1 and loses playoff.... I think it's still possible for him to get promoted. Kitao's case was almost exactly the same.

Here's to Terunofuji and Takakeisho destroying everything in their paths until they meet on day 15.

Though, if he's present and healthy Hakuho might fuck things up for both of them. Big If though

The association is in desperate need for a pair of new yokozunas.

They might have to widen up the gate a bit to let takakeisho in while he's motivated but it also depends on how many more bashos hakuho is willing to stay.

Manila brothers (Takayasu, mitakeumi) and wakatakakage will be pressured to go hard to replace current ozekis and a lying motherfucker who is to be removed.

We'll have 2 new yokozunas in September for sure. However, that scenario sounds to me like an imagination that Bernie Sanders will make a miracle comeback in 2024 and beat everyone including Pompeo, Harris and Alex Jones standing on his way.

They'll always have Shodai floating around struggling to maintain Ozeki, the new Goeido.

By the time Asanoyama returns to the top division, I'm sure Terunofuji will be long retired as the 73rd Yokozuna (maybe 74) and he won't have to be afraid anymore. (this was just a joke of course)

hahaha, very fun ending to the tournament. great to see Ura win down in Juryo, and to see Terunofuji win in the playoff. made things nice and interesting and the guy i was rooting for gets the win in the end. as mentioned above, it also sets up a really nice showdown between the two of them over the course of the next tournament. their head to head matchup is really even and there aren't any guys they'll be competing against that are their kryptonite so i'm definitely hoping for a yusho race between these two with the winner making a good case for Yokozuna promotion.

i'm a fan of Kotoeko's so it's bittersweet but it kind of sucks to have Wakatakakage and Endo lose on the last day. both had really good tournaments but that puts a bit of a damper on things. to follow up on the earlier conversation, surely Takayasu and Mitakeumi will be the East and West Sekiwake respectively, and Wakatakakage will probably bump up to East Komosubi. 11-4 at M8 makes it kind of a stretch to boost Endo all the way up into the Sanyaku, but there's really nobody else that could go to West Komosubi.

great wins from small guys Ishiura and Terutsuyoshi on the final day as well.

That would be sad and take out the mystery about a Yokozuna and devalue it. Takakeisho at this point is not Yokozuna material. Teru would be fine imo but it takes something away if they earn this with not one fight against a Yokozuna. Especially as easy as Hakuho destroyed Taka last year in practice bouts.

Takakeisho will be the shortest yokozuna in our times. And I don't recall a single yokozuna since 1980 who was a striker. There're many facts that deny his readiness for the ultimate position but if he gets 14 wins in July, he'll get there.

Hakuho is invincible in dojo spar but strikers like takakeisho and daieisho would fight differently at basho where rikishis are allowed to push throat and hit face as hard as they can.

yeah, it's a tough situation.

i think it's basically the choice of either leave the position of Yokozuna vacant after Hakuho retires, or promote someone earlier than you otherwise would. i guess i don't think it would be terrible to go without any Yokozuna for a while and it happened once (i think) before, but i'm sure the other option looks more attractive to the people making the decision.
