Stripes on BJJ belts?

Belts and stripes don't mean crap to me,and looking to when you'll get your next stripe or belt is a path to a dead end.Perfecting your technique and gaining progress in your sparring performance should be the focus. My performance is my "gauge."I've seen Blue Belts that have the belt because they've learned the required techniques for that belt level but have a hard time using them in sparring.

Holy smoke that is an old thread. I had a red tab on my purple belt. And now have red tab on my brown belt still debating about putting white tab on it

Haha, I didn't notice the dates.

Congrats on the brown belt, whenever you got it. I remember you being a purple belt for a long-ass time. You were a purple belt when I started BJJ, and I'm a purple belt now...

you get up to 4 stripes per belt.

It signifies your progress between belts.

It is not used in all BJJ schools.

It is about 6 months of training per stripe.

Is it bad if your school may or may not use stripes, and you not not know that 4 stripes is the limit before the next belt? I honestly thought it was 6. Had no idea really.

I guess I need to reiterate what I meant.Stripes and belts are a good way to let you know you're progressing,I just don't believe that should be the focus. The perfection of technique should be the focus.

Thanks, got it last december but just kept it quiet.

Who knows what is right or wrong?
For the record, Carlos and helio Gracie had an unique belt system: white, light blue for advance students and dark blue belt for instructor .

Never knew this... Interesting

there was a funny thread on here or maybe UG about a guy running a school claiming to be an original twilight blue under the gracies. He got stormed buy a brown belt and his female blubelt student. They destroyed everyone. :icon_chee

True. Interesting how things could have been.

I did Uechi-ryu Karate back in the day. Some of the senseis had white, browns and BBs. So we too could have been white belts till we hit brown.

Always kinda interesting, as things are the way they are, not because it was meant to be, nor all were in agreement. But more out of coincidence, and 'ok let's do that'

THe Gracies went with a more "traditional" belt system a la Judo once they created sport rules, Federation etc...I read it on Global Training Report website but the link no longer works.

Of course, the original idea of Carlos and Helio would have been just to teach private classes to rich business. You would have completed the 40 privates classes and be given a light blue belt.

Man, hate how all the old BJJ sites from the early 2000's are down:mad:

That would have held back BJJ soooooo hard. There would be WAY less of us, and our skill level would be greatly reduced. Kinda glad it developed the way it did. As, I really do think the way pop culture was going, that grappling was going to mostly vanish as an MA/sport

Then Carlson Gracie Snr who was teaching for the Gracie Academy decided to move out and open his own JJ Academy.

From what I read, he was the first Gracie to teach group classes, never held back on his knowledge of techniques, charged half prices for his competitors.

He created a healthy competition between his team and the Gracies. It was common for him to challenge relatives into a JJ match against his own up and coming students.

So much bad information in this thread. Stripes are an indicator of some form of progression beyond a base rank. Traditionally, a maximum of 4 stripes are used to indicate ranks between the belts below black. Black belt stripes are called degrees, which are about more than a simple indicator of progression.

Literally everything else varies from gym to gym, and in some cases even student to student. There are no official standards for timelines or ranking criteria for stripes.

Pretty much this! /thread

I've always wondered how BJJ would be different (if at all) had the Gracies stayed with the 3 belt system instead of switching to the 7 belt system.
