Media Stranger optics: Dern getting her 3rd stripe after Hill dec or Couture getting BB for subbing Toney?

i'd forgotten about the couture thing, that's actually pretty sad. i could have subbed james toney.

They have this saying going "it's important to know who gave you a BB and under who you have been training". How about making the belts and "graduation" a bit more uniform so that everybody knows the value of a specific belt? Nowadays a belt means shit ...

The couture black belt was worse.

the Dern degree was….eh. But, to answer OP, the couture promotion was worse.

Ag least Dern showed a variety of Bjj against an mma veteran who actually trains Bjj. Couture just tapped a white belt.

I don't really get these degrees for BJJ black belts.

Werdum is only a 2nd degree BJJ black belt. Do you know who else is a 2nd degree BJJ Black belt?

Marc Goddard.

Do you know who is the 1st degree BJJ black belt? Kron Gracie.

It seems so meaningless.
Couldn't agree more, pretty sure the Miyao brothers at their purple belt days could sub Goddard.

I'm actually a black belt under Mackenzie father too. Degrees are given if you are still practicing and passing the art of BJJ to others.

So a competitor, teachers, spokesman , coach, referee , volunteer, all that incubus the BJJ lifestyle. The degrees don't make you any better in BJJ it's self if that's what your thinking.

That's awesome
Ironically my lineage is also megaton related.

I trained with/under Christophe Leininger and he was Megatons training partner in Arizona way back when.

More ironically, I'm not a Dern fan.

As for black belts. I never gave one damn about degrees whatsoever. As you said, it's more about time than anything else.

I got black belts for competition purposes more than anything else.

(it's annoying to have to have an instructor sign a waiver allowing you to compete at that level)

P.S. For everyone else reading Megaton is insanely good.

Who says they're just getting it for their performance? Most of the work is put in at the gym, the trainers just pick that moment to reward them.

Dern got her black belt in 2012, she was due her third stripe

Black belt stripes are time served, they aren't graded in anyway or for special achievements.

Belts and degrees are basically just a scheme based on gratification tactics that we largely only follow because of tradition.
I've trained BJJ for a long time, but I agree with this. I've never liked belt rankings.

He did not get it for that actually,

"I was going to give Randy his black belt two months prior to the event, but I wanted to do something nice for him and present it to him in front of the world. He deserves it and needs to be recognized for his accomplishment."

And it was not in BJJ either.

They didn't receive the stripe/belt based on those performances. They're coaches were already going to award them, but they used the fights as an opportunity to do it publicly on a big stage. It's really not that complicated.

Stop bringing common sense and knowledge into this...Sherdog is about pouncing with negativity and marginalizating the accomplishments of others! lol

Someone was trying to tell me Toney’s BBJ was solid because he’d been secretly training for years. Shit was hilarious.
