Pretty crazy coincidence that the time of Dern earning that degree falls within a minute of her winning a UFC fight.
Couldn't agree more, pretty sure the Miyao brothers at their purple belt days could sub Goddard.I don't really get these degrees for BJJ black belts.
Werdum is only a 2nd degree BJJ black belt. Do you know who else is a 2nd degree BJJ Black belt?
Marc Goddard.

Do you know who is the 1st degree BJJ black belt? Kron Gracie.
It seems so meaningless.
I'm actually a black belt under Mackenzie father too. Degrees are given if you are still practicing and passing the art of BJJ to others.
So a competitor, teachers, spokesman , coach, referee , volunteer, all that incubus the BJJ lifestyle. The degrees don't make you any better in BJJ it's self if that's what your thinking.
I've trained BJJ for a long time, but I agree with this. I've never liked belt rankings.Belts and degrees are basically just a scheme based on gratification tactics that we largely only follow because of tradition.
i'd forgotten about the couture thing, that's actually pretty sad. i could have subbed james toney.
They didn't receive the stripe/belt based on those performances. They're coaches were already going to award them, but they used the fights as an opportunity to do it publicly on a big stage. It's really not that complicated.
He did not get it for that actually,
"I was going to give Randy his black belt two months prior to the event, but I wanted to do something nice for him and present it to him in front of the world. He deserves it and needs to be recognized for his accomplishment."
And it was not in BJJ either.
