Jones and him are too old to be fighting,and they need to be giving Tom the really real belt.

I think Tom as champ there is literally zero chance Jones steps up IMHO, Sergei the UFC MAY have gotten him to step up with big money with the hope that his grappling might be vulnerable.

Worst thing would be for Tom to end up on the shelf for ages due to the Jones farce when he's already lost some of his prime to injury.
