Stipe Miocic and Father Time

If the advantage of starting late to have less accumulated damage outweighed physical decline then everyone would be delaying their MMA training later in life.
Its not about purposely delaying your start, it just means the ones that have a delayed start can also fight longer than the fighters that started earlier. It's like a car, both are from the same year but one has a 100,000+ more miles on it and had to get fixed up from major accidents vs the same car with less miles with no accidents. Which car would be able to handle the wear and tear more currently? Which car would you be comfortable trying to push to it's limit?

There's examples of fighters starting early and finding success. There are also examples of fighters starting late and finding success. A lot of it is going to be dependent on the individual person, that is going to be the real deciding factor.

You're splitting hairs unless you can quantify how much damage DC took in his fights and training camps vs Stipe. Regardless the one metric we all know is their age difference.

And if age was such a non-factor there would be no incentive to start training early.

That's for one fight. DC started late, so all the damage he accumulated from mma happened later in his life. He wrestled before which is also physical but not the same type of damage from mma.

It was (rightfully) pointed out that at 38 Stipe wasn't quite the same against Ngannou as compared to his past years...and that a rematch unfortunately doesn't look likely to go Stipe's way because he isn't getting any younger.

Doesn't this show how great DC is, given that he's 3-4 years older than Stipe...

Imagine adding 3 years to Stipe or subtracting 3 years from DC....age for age they wouldn't still be 2-1 Stipe in their 3 fights.

Some people lose perspective of this when they wrongly suggest that Stipe is higher on the GOAT scale than DC.

Age is a mf. It really is quite a shame that DC started relative late in his MMA career and never could really come out of the shadow of Jones at LHW. I think prime DC at HW is one of the if not the best HW this world has seen so far.
In my book he is way higher on both the GOAT scale and the HW GOAT scale than Stipe.

Cormier is a double champ... and defended both belts. Definitely over Stipe in GOAT talk.

Disagree. Stipe has more top wins and proved in their trilogy to be the better fighter. The double champ status as cool as it sounds shouldn't count that much, especially since at LHW he never beat Jones and at HW his initial win over Stipe, in hindsight, looks like a fluke.

DC was a beast and hands down one of the all time greats, but no way he can be above Stipe imho.

What's Francis' real age? I think it's the same as Stipe's, maybe more if the rumours are true

So maybe it's more about mileage & technique (not being hit in the head too much).

He is 58, per sources, he started MMA after a long career in accounting and sales magement after losing a bet with friends at a BBQ.
If the rumours are true and if I didn't made it up.

Francis is 34, considerably younger than Stipe and much younger than DC

DC was old but was a wrestler. He hadnt softened his brain for years by the time he came over to MMA.
He didnt really have many wars until later either.

At the times Stipe and DC had fought, Stipe had more brain mileage.

DC looked old in the 3rd Stipe fight. He's also overweight (or too small) for HW. Small guy with strength of a HW. But can't wrestle like he used to. Right time to walk away.

I didn't see Stipe looking old despite his age, but Ngannou preparing well for the rematch. Fixed the biggest mistakes he made in their 1st fight. Means the 3rd would be tough for Stipe. For other HW's Stipe is still tough to beat. He's got the champ 5-round experience with gameplanning others don't have. Most HW's don't have the cardio or pacing to deal with him in a longer fight.
