Stipe has accomplished all of this with a full time job as paramedic/firefighter. RIP Werdum.

Seriously the guy should quit and dedicate himself full-time to MMA.

I remember for the arlosvki fight he was working.

I hope he didn't work that much for the werdum fight....if he didn't RIP werdum...a properly trained stipe should be scary.

This is a guy who IMO beat jds and has been beating full time fighters while having a fulltime job!

It's inspiring but it shows how much he division sucks right now.

Also wished if he went to a real camp.

Dude, Struve toyed with him and KO'd the poor guy. Stipe is not championship material.

Jds KTFO werdum....stipe arguably beat jds, at the very least gave him a good fight.

Anybody can go back and time to bring up BS.

Keep in mind, stipe is not a full time fighter, yet has been doing really good.

He probably has enough time to train though.Firefighters spend most of their time waiting for an emergency and so most of them train during that time.Still impressive though.

Yes, Stipe rescues people for a living.

But...

who's gonna rescue Stipe when his arm is in Werdum's grip?

Yeah and on top of that you work once every three days. Plus benefits and retirement, Stipe would be silly to quit.

Actually, it makes perfect sense. Considering his lack of experience at the time and the fact that he has a another job, it's to be expected that there will be growing pains. If you cannot see that Stipe has improved exponentially and is better implementing his tools in his fights, you must be blind. If I recall correctly, he is a Golden Gloves boxer as well as an accomplished wrestler (to a degree).

I do favor Werdum in this fight, but Stipe is no slouch and I think it's an intriguing fight.

Came to say this. They have LOTS of downtime

I favor Werdum but it Stipe is going to go for the huge upset like balls crazy. I am thinking Stipe is going to surprise us all on fight night.

Or not.

We'll all find out this weekend.

Stipe is good. Watching him fight, however, somehow makes me feel that the dude is nowhere close to where he could be if he trained differently.

Being a fighter full time doesn't automatically make you better.

The techniques are simple to get and all they need is doing them right, and now those can take a lot of time or they can come to you instantly right from the get go. For example, when you see "savant" kids professionally playing a piano or doing calculus you think it looks impressive and they may go far, and undeniably they do possess those skills you saw, but most often than not it's that they reached their peak in that skill at early age and seldom improve after that, it just came earlier for them. Now, fighters are obviously constricted to their bodies, which must be matured enough to be able to compete, but from then it gets pretty much the same as with the kidos, some throwing nice combos and being comfortable with their body like Holloway and Romero, or they can be full time fighters for 30 or more years and still fight like a bum out from the street.

I like Miocic and his title shot is well deserved. Still, what's supposed to be his best win ? Over the hill Hunt and Arlovski? Werdum got his IMO.

he still has his job, right?

so another reason hes gonna lose and another reason for me to cheer for it. he doesnt take his mma career that seriously

I came on to say the same thing. I have friends that are full time fire fighters and they work 2x per week. They're "on" (basically sitting in firehouse cooking, working out, playing games) waiting for a fire call for 24 hours, then they are off for the next 3 days. It's a pretty sweet gig for a fighter if you ask me.

I don't think he has much of a choice, also LOTS of fighters have jobs. I mean it's a bit inspiring, but lets not get it twisted and act like he survived a holocaust:/ To counter that, the insane hard work Werdum had to put in to become a multi time world BJJ champion from dirt poor beginnings, and now UFC champ is equally inspiring in my books. It's just perspective imo.
