Steam Awards 2025 announced

When you play co-op games your standards lower in general so we were quite surprised how much we liked Untitled Goose Game. It was a lot of fun but still not game of the year.

Err...the game referenced was "Grim Fandango". Of course "Edith Finch" has been talked about in here. It's an 8th gen stand out. Since you're being petty, though...
Grim Fandango came out in 1998, not 2012, but it was just mentioned a week ago:
1998 is still the GOAT gaming year IMO. Not just quality/quantity but some pretty important releases.

Zelda OoT
Tekken 3 (PS1)
Gran Turismo
Half Life
Metal Gear Solid
Resident Evil 2

Grim Fandango
Starcraft
Banjo Kazooie
Baldur's Gate
Panzer Dragoon Saga
Oddworld 2
Thief
Turok 2
Crash Bandicoot 3
Unreal
Pokemon Blue/Red

Fallout 2
Colony Wars 2
Myth 2
Spyro the Dragon
Rogue Squadron
Final Fantasy Tactics
WCW/NWO Revenge
Rainbow Six

Half Life/MGS/Zelda all came out like in the same three week span.
And many other times.
I think those point and click games are funny. I’m talking about stuff like Sam and Max, Monkey Island, Grim Fandango, etc. These were the games that made me laugh the most. Also it’s not really considered a point and click game but Thank Goodness You’re Here is a silly game although it’s extremely British in its humor.
Vice city or grim fandango
I could keep going, but you get the point.

See? Talked about. You really got an axe to grind against that fucker, don't ya? LOL.
Four mentions. One of those is from 2016, and only two of the others from 2020 or later that was NOT precipitated by the fact it was a free game giveaway. That's what prompted one: it was not an off-the-cuff mention. Pathetic.

Journey won't endure. Nobody cares about it.

Alright, buddy. Have a good night.
Just being brutally honest. Rank it for me. Shows us where Journey ranks in 2012 for you. You rank it above every game I listed on the last page? Because I will rank Edith Finch in 2017, and I will have it almost exactly where Acclaimed Games puts it (5th for the year).

Well, I wouldn't rank Journey too high, as it's more of a novelty game among traditional videogames, but you ranking that popup book as #5 in 2017 is insane.

You're telling me that that 2 hour popup book is #5 among...

Uncharted 4
Prey
Persona 5
Nier Automata
Cuphead
Resident Evil 7
Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Divinity 2
Hollow Knight
Assassin's Creed Origins

Those are 10 games. In all honestly, which of those games is "Edith Finch" better than, that would land it at #5?

It's all subjective. I get it. If you really liked it, that's fine, but if you're holding it to the same standard as "Journey" and the games it competed with in that year, you gotta admit that "Edith Finch" is rather lacking by your own standards.

Yep, I'll take it over AC: Origins (easy), Hollow Knight, Cuphead. Meant more to me than I care about that kind of gameplay. Don't play Persona games. Never played Divinity 2. Uncharted 4 is 2016. Even with some I'd take over it there, and some you didn't mention like Horizon: Zero Dawn, it's barely off #5 for me-- like I said.

I see you're not interested in ranking Journey among your 2012. I'll accept your concession it is wildly overrated.

See, that's just ridiculous, in my opinion. "Edith Finch" is better than "Hollow Knight" and "Cuphead"? really? I mean, I can give or take AC:O, but it's a far better "game" than "Edith Finch" all the same.
Meant more to me than I care about that kind of gameplay.
And that's what fans of "Journey" in 2012 would say.

What concession? All I said was that I liked it. Not that it was the best game of that year. You're arguing with a version of me in your head.

I honestly wouldn't rank it above the heavy hitters of that year. Is it overrated? Maybe, but no more overrated than "Edith Finch" that you're ranking above some games you didn't even play, and some other games that are so much better, and will be remembered for far longer. You haven't proven anything, except for that you really hate "Journey", LOL.

You're being awefully childish with post number comparisons. It's mentioned a lot more. Heretic just stopped at 4 posts but I was also curious earlier today and did a search and found way more than 4 posts.

Journey 9/10

I didn't know what to expect from Journey as half the descriptions I'd read had labelled it "indescribable". Now I know what they mean, the game is amazing and should be played by everyone. It's only 2 hours long and can be played through in one go although I would play it again.

Brilliant game.

From the top of my head in no particular order:

Portal

Planescape: Torment

The Grim Fandango

The Secret of Monkey Island

Silent Hill 2

Shadow of the Colossus

Journey

Gabriel Knight

The Longest Journey

Loom

Kerbal Space Program

SpecOps: The Line

Get some arty stuff like Journey. I highly recommend the Unfinished Swan. She'll dig that for sure. Beautiful game.

By Abzu:
I havent played it but it seems like the art and music directors from Journey worked on this game. Journey is truly a masterpiece. It wasnt until this part, where the art, colour palette and serenity of it just made me cry. It was an emotional game without any words between some random guy who...

By jojoRed (assuming it's about Journey.
I want my Journey theme. My favourite theme on the PS4, such serene music and the yellows just make me smile.

Even you yourself was previously quoted as stating Journey was a solid game (or solid addition to PS+).

Damn, so they're handing out Journey this month? Solid.

Not really sure why Herectic needs to concede anything. It was heralded as a great game and clearly there are quite a few posts agreeing with this assessment.

I think great games like Edith Finch and Journey will be remembered more than people think. The fact that people still talk about them almost a decade later says a lot. They are emotional journeys that stuck with people. I think it is pretty silly to even be comparing them to different genres. Some games are remembered for the impact they have on people emotionally, some are remembered for their art style, others for their ability to test your patience, etc. I think it's why I like this industry so much and why I have never burned myself out. I try to play a bunch of genres and if I catch myself playing too much of the same genre I go on some websites or watch some videos for recommendations. Anyway it's all subjective in the end. I don't think we should be fighting over something like this as if it is fact. It's like trying to tell someone that x movie is the best and you're not allowed to disagree. Just a bit silly in my opinion. On a positive note everyone here seems to have good taste in video games lol.

Because those weren't recent (2015 or earlier except Senzo's that I can see), and I pointed out how that game is memory-holed.
Even you yourself was previously quoted as stating Journey was a solid game (or solid addition to PS+).
Yeah, based on reputation. That was before I played it. This is the kindest I've ever been:
Okay, for me, the title that jumps out as the most undeserving is obvious. Not only should it not be on the list, it's way, way, way, way, way too high. You almost wonder if it's a sympathy vote as it was the only game from 2012 to make it.

#29 Journey (meh)
100%20best%20games_0071_Journey.jpg

Don't get me wrong, it was a cool experience, not really like anything else you ever came across in games, but...I hold with those who contend it wasn't really a "game" at all, it was a short, interactive walkabout. While it was beautiful and mysterious, it didn't really hit that hard. It was meh. I was done and didn't think about it again even later that day. Let's be real: this game isn't even Top 10 in its year. Handsome Jack alone shits on Journey. The year had Borderlands 2, Far Cry 3, Max Payne 3, Telltale's The Walking Dead, X-COM: Enemy Unknown, Torchlight II, Hotline Miami, Guild Wars 2, Planetside 2, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Diablo III, Dishonored, and the deeply underrated Halo 4. I'd take any of those over this.

Contrast that with a similarly unconventional & short game from the list amounting to an interactive narrative that utterly wallops you: What Became of Edith Finch. Even if you don't consider it a "game", which is fine, I wouldn't, it was freaking brilliant, and emotionally devastates you. I didn't realize how invested I was until the anecdote about the cannery. Suddenly I was crushed. Hollowed out. By the time the game concluded I didn't want it to go, I felt robbed, like I'd lost a loved one myself, like I'd lived an entire lifetime in that one spot on that coastal overview of the pacific northwest. The game is a towering memory in my lifetime of memories playing games. And they ranked it lower. F-U-C-K O-F-F.

#39 What Became of Edith Finch (masterpiece)

You are basing your assumption on recent posts in this sub-forum? That's just plain stupid. There's not enough of a sample size to make that determination. If this was reddit you might have a point being forgotten if there is little to no mention of the game in recent years but that's not the case. Journey is mentioned almost as much as WRoEF on reddit.

I browse Reddit, Neogaf, and the like. Similar to here, there are always threads asking questions like, "What are your favorite 5 games of all time?", "What are your 5 favorite Playstation 3 games?", etc.

Journey might as well be a unicorn. You guys won't even pretend to put it in your own Top 5 for 2012, much less #1, but you try to pass this off as some common opinion of some hypothetical Redditor-- Google at the ready. Yawn.

Damn what happened to our boy Jojo he used to post here all the time.

And you think untitled goose or WRoEF will make these overall top 5 list?

My point is the game will be as memorable or as forgettable as these other two games, especially WRoEF since they sold about the same amount of copies.

It’s your insane hateful take on Journey that I disagree with. It certainly isn’t GOTY (and that includes the other two) in my book but I never played it so meh.

And you think WRoEF will make the list?
Yeah, I do. I just said I'd have it up there myself.

My "insane, hateful" take on Journey? LOL. My take is that it's a wildly overrated. That's not insane. It's mundane. Happens everyday on the Dog for movies, music, TV, games. You guys won't even pretend to sincerely contradict it. You jabber about these abstract Redditors because you're too embarrassed by the prospect of admitting you liked it more than 20 other games I could name from that year. I'm not at all ashamed of talking about Edith Finch hovering around my Top 5 for 2017.

I really enjoyed Journey and didn't like Edith Finch, but I might be confusing the latter with gone home.

Mind you, I was high as a kite playing Journey, and only played it years later. I played it either when I first got my projector or right when I later purchased 75 inch TV. It was stunning.

It reminded me of one of those Universal Studios visual experiences, especially with a fresh giant screen I wasn't used to.

It wasn't something I wanted to do again anytime soon. Abzu was kinda like that too, one and done visual feast, but wasn't as good as Journey.

Never played Journey, but I enjoyed Abzu quite a lot. Maybe because it was a new type of game for myself, and they might just not have the same type of staying power and appeal, when looking at that genre as a whole, so it depends on what game of that type you played first.

Agreed your comment about it being a One and done visual adventure.

Rank it in your 2012.
