Staying tight and low and NOT tensing up muscles.

I definitely tense up quite often on everything. For example, say I am doing an armbar from guard and the instructor comes around and tells me to close the space and pinch my knees I have a tendency to really SQUEEZE my knees together, and burn out my legs. Is doing such a movement as simple as just putting my knees closer together with no extra energy or force?
Only time my muscles tense up, is when we practice

When the guy on the ground has your leg and you get low and grab your ankle and roll into a triangle (gets me every time for some reason with tense muscles)
Having a hard time understanding this thread.
