Starting Sunday, Tik Tok and WeChat are banned in the U.S.

@CubicleGangster is there anyway to effectively ban these things or is it fairly easy for people to get around whatever the government does to ban them?

Not my area of expertise, but since he is blocking downloads of the apps it should be easy to work around. TikTok will most likely be pulled from all the app stores but outside of that I'm sure people will be able to, for example, share the apk between android users to keep using it.

why is this being banned? the ts says nothing of the reasons behind it.

edit-- the reasons cited by the trump admin are security reasons to do with chinese data mining.

Crackdown attempt on mass stupidity. Unfortunately it's too small a step to have a meaningful impact.

just edited my post. trump admin cites data mining concerns from the chinese. i would like to hear some more comments on this as it sort of doesn't add up.

if its a crackdown on mass stupidity lest start with rap music and a majority of pop music like WAP. obviously i dont actually mean that but can tiktok really be the more degenerate force in the country when pornography exists?

lol at making a big deal over a phone app that a bunch of vapid children use. society is doomed.

How does it not add up? The Chinese government, legally, has the ability to access any data that's owned by any Chinese company any moment they want. Coupled with the fact Tik Tok is essentially personal data-gathering malware masquerading as social media, the problem is 1 + 1. The only mystery here is that it wasn't done sooner, and that other countries are somehow OK with the Chinese gov. spying on their citizenry.

I thought Oracle bought TikTok? Or did the bid not go through?
