Hello Sherdoggers,

So I think I've come up with a great idea for a website. Its not only a website for viewing (like a restaurant website), it will require a lot more, data processing, storage etc. Think of a LinkedIn type of site. Since I don't know ANYTHING about programming or web design, I'd like to get your advice on how to proceed? What kind of professional do I need to hire? How do I register a website, domain? Any idea of how much this would cost? Hopefully someone here has some experience with this and can provide some insight.

You need a programmer to be your partner. Registering a domain and getting someone to host your site is easy, use Google. Programmers are expensive and servers are expensive if you have the money. Can you be more specific what kind of site you want to make?

Godaddy or Hover for the domain name.

You may need a web developer as well as web designer if you can't find someone who's good at both. I'm not really up to date on where to find people.

If you go the rails route, you can use Heroku and get it up and running for free or very little to start. Of course if the site gets bigger then you'll need a paid option.

Also map out exactly what you want people to be able to do on the site and be prepared to prioritize and pare some of it down initially.

I bought my domain with Godaddy and built my site with their sitebuilding thing, its nothing complicated but just a simple site to find information about my company, I also pulled demo videos from YouTube to add visual information. Nowadays if you are curious and have patience you can do your own thing which I recommend because if you need to hire a site builder then for any little shit you want to add in your website you have to pay the dude again... "hey we just came out with this promotion!" oh shit call the site builder guy we have to pay him again... forget about that shit, if you can, I say learn that shit and do it on your own.

Money money money

You're going to need it if you want to build a site like that.
