I don't get how people don't see the genius of the ending tbh.

The reason the show is so good is due to the dialogue/character building and mixing of drama, dark comedy, action, etc. The show definitely has the mob elements throughout and scenes with that, but the actual storylines of each character outside of their working life is what makes the show interesting.

Sopranos is still a show that you can rewatch several times. Breaking Bad, while a great show, is much harder to watch multiple times at it is completely plot-driven and built on suspense.

Agree. Breaking Bad was an awesome show but Sopranos is in a class of it's own. Nothing comes close.

anywhere near as menacing?

No, because you get used that that was his basic expression

He will ask you if you could pass him the wine bottle please, all with the murder face on :D

Don't forget Ralph's 20 y.o. heewah!

My favourite episode still has to be Pine Barrens. Or when Paulie + Chris fight over paying the cheque and end up killing the waiter lol..
Or the one where Jackie Jr. robs Chris' card game and we get to see how bad ass Chris could be.

I love this show.

It's a great show, not on par with Breaking Bad and TWD though.

Tony and his crew are more involved as the shown goes on. Don't let the drama with Tony and his mom stop you, that's just the beggining of his journey.

The shit with Tony and his Mom was painfully slow, but it gets really amazing as the series goes on TS.

Everybody should. Sopranos was my all time No. 2 TV series until I got into Gomorra. On the same level as The Wire imo.

True. I took me 4 seasons to acknowlege it's GOAT status. :D When I rewatched the first and second season I realized how great they were from the beginning, I just had to get to know and love all those characters at first.

Pine Barrens is probably my favourite episode.
Walnuts: The man killed 16 czekoslovakians. He was an interior decorator.

Chrissy: His house looked like shit...

I've always heard this is a great show, one of the best. So I started watching it, so far I've gotten through 10 episodes. It's honestly not what I was expecting, there's less mafia shit and more people drama so far. The show so far is about Tony's life and his personal struggles, the mafia stuff has taken a backseat for the most part.

So my question is, is the whole show like this? Is there any intense action or does the mafia part of it pick up anytime soon or at all? Not that I think its boring or anything, its interesting, but I had different expectations going in. When does the show start getting really good?

I still think it's the best show ever made (with Breaking Bad being a close second).

Semi-spoilers below (no plot spoilers, just some insight into how the tone of the show develops.)

The family stuff is pretty important to the tone and message of the show. Tony destroys people. Everything about him and everything that he does and is associated with simply wrecks shit. But built on the foundation of this destruction, Tony gets to have his nice family in the suburbs.

What seems to be offbeat family drama becomes more disgusting as the show goes on and Tony (and the mob) leaves everyone in his wake.

That's not what everyone takes from it, but that really is the structure of the show.

You're supposed to be Melfi. Sitting in her chair, intrigued at first, then charmed a little, and then finally feeling duped for having ever thought there was anything redemptive to be found in this psychopath.

So, yeah, you need to let that develop. The mob stuff comes along. If you're hoping to see legs get broken, and guys get whacked, and hookers and blow being used and abused, you won't be disappointed.

And it's worth watching for Gandolfini's herculean acting effort alone. There are countless characters and storylines in that show... and they all spin in gravitational orbit around Tony Soprano.

Im watching it again for the...5th time? I flip flop this show with breaking bad.

The show does get better as i am still waiting to get through with season 1.

That ending though is the WORST of all time. Lost was notorious for having a dumb ending and it was but at least they tried.

No, i always stop at the last episode before that fucking joke of an ending. The way the 2nd to last episode fades to black is exactly how i would picture it.

I've seen a really good breakdown of the episode that I find pretty convincing about what's happening in that final scene:

If you watch the scene carefully you'll notice that the view keeps jumping from a third person shot (of Tony and the family and the restaurant), to a first person shot, which is from Tony's eyes. Every time the bell on the door rings, Tony looks up, and then we get a quick cut and see what he sees as he watches to see who comes through the door. Tony is always on the alert. He is watching to door to see his family arrive, but he's also watching the door to see if a threat is showing up.

So we see his daughter arrive and try to park. Then we see a guy in the restaurant go past Tony to the bathroom, which should ring some alarms if we've watched the Godfather movie. Then we see Tony's daughter opening the door from the outside. The next thing we SHOULD see is the cut to Tony's perspective... but we see a cut to black... suggesting that the next thing Tony sees is NOT his daughter walking through the door... it's oblivion... which is what he might see if, say, a bullet just entered the back of his skull.

Anyway, my own interpretation was that the final scene was open ended and just drew attention to the fact that Tony will never have a normal life that lets him enjoy a night out with the family because he's always looking over his shoulder and watching the door to make sure it's his family coming in and not someone who wants to kill him (not that those two things are mutually exclusive). But I found this breakdown pretty convincing.

Sopranos is the greatest TV show of all time along side Game of Thrones.

Yeah haha Chris & Paulie were the biggest idiots. Yeah I was cracking up in the episode with the Russian that escapes them & Paulie suggest to mix the ketchup & mustard packets while they are hungry & freezing in the car.
