I've always heard this is a great show, one of the best. So I started watching it, so far I've gotten through 10 episodes. It's honestly not what I was expecting, there's less mafia shit and more people drama so far. The show so far is about Tony's life and his personal struggles, the mafia stuff has taken a backseat for the most part.
So my question is, is the whole show like this? Is there any intense action or does the mafia part of it pick up anytime soon or at all? Not that I think its boring or anything, its interesting, but I had different expectations going in. When does the show start getting really good?
I still think it's the best show ever made (with Breaking Bad being a close second).
Semi-spoilers below (no plot spoilers, just some insight into how the tone of the show develops.)
The family stuff is pretty important to the tone and message of the show. Tony destroys people. Everything about him and everything that he does and is associated with simply wrecks shit. But built on the foundation of this destruction, Tony gets to have his nice family in the suburbs.
What seems to be offbeat family drama becomes more disgusting as the show goes on and Tony (and the mob) leaves everyone in his wake.
That's not what everyone takes from it, but that really is the structure of the show.
You're supposed to be Melfi. Sitting in her chair, intrigued at first, then charmed a little, and then finally feeling duped for having ever thought there was anything redemptive to be found in this psychopath.
So, yeah, you need to let that develop. The mob stuff comes along. If you're hoping to see legs get broken, and guys get whacked, and hookers and blow being used and abused, you won't be disappointed.
And it's worth watching for Gandolfini's herculean acting effort alone. There are countless characters and storylines in that show... and they all spin in gravitational orbit around Tony Soprano.
