I've always heard this is a great show, one of the best. So I started watching it, so far I've gotten through 10 episodes. It's honestly not what I was expecting, there's less mafia shit and more people drama so far. The show so far is about Tony's life and his personal struggles, the mafia stuff has taken a backseat for the most part.

So my question is, is the whole show like this? Is there any intense action or does the mafia part of it pick up anytime soon or at all? Not that I think its boring or anything, its interesting, but I had different expectations going in. When does the show start getting really good?

Tony and his crew are more involved as the shown goes on. Don't let the drama with Tony and his mom stop you, that's just the beggining of his journey.

Got super bored about half way through season 2 for that exact reason.

I remember shit like I dont like my brother and he was gonna be head of the family. It reminded me of a rated R soap opera

I never quite got this mentality. If a show doesnt catch why would anyone push forward through it. The people seemed to hate the ending so i dont think people are missing that much

If you want a really violent mafia show, with lots of action scenes and whatnot, you will be disappointed. However, if you want a thoughtful dark drama, which blends in violence, dark humor and makes you think sometimes, then you should continue watching it.

It's brilliant, but maybe not for everyone.

Sopranos is great, the character exploration "IS the show," the Mafia backdrop is just the icing on the cake.

There's 6 seasons.... season 4 and 5 are considered some of the best television ever so it's worth sticking it out , but if someone is expecting mob style executions and beatings it might not be worth their time.

It’s not a really mafia show in the sense it’s all gonna be about gangsters doing gangster shit. It’s more of drama that shows the human side of people who happen to be gangsters. Some of the most interesting parts of the show for me involve how they deal with cultural questions and more down-to-earth humorous stuff like episode when some guys try to hide that they eat pussy.

It’s a show that shows you that a notorious gangster like Tony is just person like everybody else. Dude does some bad shit and is sometimes a badass but there is a side to him that loves animals and cares for his children. I found myself thinking he’s a dick a lot of the time but sometime I found myself rooting for him, like when he smashed that one dude’s teeth out for talking shit to his daughter.

Anyway, great show. I loved it.

More Pauly Walnuts and Christopher later in the show also.

I think it gets better as it goes along.

It was easier to get into than the wire which is also awesome but more work to watch initially.

The first two seasons (which are the best two) are actually the heaviest on mafia business. As the show goes downhill, it correlates with how much time they spent on Tony's personal/family life. Season six (especially the second half) is a total abortion.

Gonna keep watching it, but its not what I expected. I enjoy it, but was hoping there was more mafia business and action.

I just started watching it earlier this year too, OP. It's actually the third time I've attempted watching it since my old man bought me the boxset a couple of Christmas's back (I was always a little put off by the fact that the show's ending seems to be universally hated lol), but I stuck it out this time and I'm now a few episodes into s3.

I'm like you, a little underwhelmed. It's a good show but I think maybe my expectations were too high after hearing people putting it up there with the likes of The Wire, Breaking Bad etc.

It's not quite at that level for me personally, although maybe if I'd watched it at the time I'd have enjoyed it more it as it definitely seems quite dated and some of it seems pretty cheesy.

I need to get back on it actually, as I haven't watched any for a few weeks.

If you're expecting Goodfellas the TV show or whatever, you'll be sorely dissapointed;

The Sopranos is a deep, rich, sophistocated look at the juxtaposition of a mob boss and head of a family. Your first paragragh indeed nailed it - it's just as much about Tony's struggles with his family than with his 'Family' - it's how he balances the two.

IT IS a GOAT show, with some amazing episodes and satisfying til the end.

It's a drama dude; not a mobster show - might be too sophistocated for you - maybe you should watch re-runs of Dukes of Hazzard ; )

It's a psychological drama set in a mafia setting. Don't worry though, you'll get your fair share of murders, racketeering and cons.

This is my favorite series of all time. I remember the show hooking me early, but maybe it's not for you TS. I thought the same thing about the Wire. I thought it was a good show, but I didn't understand the Hype after watching the first season. I ended up watching the whole series and while it was a great show there are several other tv series that I'd put ahead of it.

If you want a really violent mafia show, with lots of action scenes and whatnot,

You should watch Gomorrah and man up and deal with the subtitles, or maybe Boardwalk Empire but only the first 4 seasons and not the short (and bad) 5th season.

The Sopranos is a much better show however and anyone only on s1 or s2 should carry on an watch them all.
My only problem with it is the end but probably not something to discuss here or without spoiler tags.

Im watching it again for the...5th time? I flip flop this show with breaking bad.

The show does get better as i am still waiting to get through with season 1.

That ending though is the WORST of all time. Lost was notorious for having a dumb ending and it was but at least they tried.

No, i always stop at the last episode before that fucking joke of an ending. The way the 2nd to last episode fades to black is exactly how i would picture it.
