Maul was damn awesome - everything that kylo is not.

But to be fair the whole point of his arc is that he's becoming that guy. We sort of expected him to be the pre-made Villain coming into the movie but it seems like this trilogy will be about the antagonists arc just as much as the protagonist, which I think could be really cool. I have no doubt that by the end of the trilogy he's gonna put Maul to shame.

Except the map itself might be amended to clear up any confusion. Usually they change the EU stuff to conform to what we've seen in the movies and not the other way around. I mean, for Starkiller Base to have even landed that shot on Hosnian Prime... it was QUICK. Like FIRE and BAM halfway across the galaxy three planets are Aldreaan'd.

That was why the visuals in the movie contradict both the dialogue and the action of the movie. We are told that Stakiller is a hypervelocity weapon and we see it in action destroying entire solar systems across interstellar distances. The beam would have to move through hyperspace to reach its target, and therefore shouldn't be visible in normal space.

I haven't gotten to that part of the novelization yet, but I expect that they'll rationalize it as the beam being so powerful that it created an "echo" in normal space or something like that.

She's 23 IRL, I dunno how old she is in the movies.

According to Wookiepedia Rey was born roughly 11 years after the Battle of Endor and met BB-8 30 years after the Battle which makes her roughly 19.

This. So much this. The movie initially shows him as a badass replacement for Vader and spends the rest of the movie showing you how he's nowhere near Vader's level yet. I think people are stuck on thinking that he's supposed to be an unstoppable badass and that's where the anger/dislike for how he was handle in the movie comes from.

No.

You don't get to become a bad ass after we've watch you cry and moan and get spanked by a girl who barely knows the force.

He will never be "that guy"

It's this lack of understand JJ and some peeps in this thread fail to realize. Watching this evil dude get his ass kicked once is great, twice...meh.

So even if he comes back uber after eating horse meat. I've already seen multiple gifs and shoop threads of him getting his shit pushed in. So the second time your gonna show me I'm not as amazed.

This is also why I feel that the visual of watching Rey toss around a light saber shouldn't have been blown in this movie either.

I should feel that she's very much the underdog when it comes time for her to fight Ren. I should be worried for her, and this shit shouldn't have played out in this movie.

Lol at you talking about people not understanding something.

the guy threw 2 hissy fits inside his ship, recking things with his sabre when things didnt go his way, was having a dick measuring contest with admiral ron weasley and we're disappointed he wasn't portrayed as a badass.

he was purposely portrayed as a young, emotional sith padawan who had amazing force power but still succumbed to his emotions and ultimately meant his downfall.

Anakin got whooped at least twice before he became Darth Vader as well....albeit by more experienced swordsman. He was also a whiny bastard at times, too.

Thought Kylo Ren was a great character......much better than doing a carbon copy of Vader from IV.

Which means that she also looks a lot like Natalie Portman. Excellent casting.
She definitely favors Portman as well, and she nailed the part, so kudos all around. Starw Wars lives or dies by casting, and this trilogy is off to a great start because of that.

hopefully, he was a let down. I was expecting some serious bad assery (which we saw in flashes) but the way he was whipped (injured or not) by Rey was disappointing.

And got beat by a girl who learned the force about 5 minutes earlier.

It's fine I honestly don't think he will be the ultimate villian. They will probably have him have a change of heart near the end and him and the girl will fight someone on another level. Whoever is training him I assume. I'm sure in the next movie he will come back even stronger and kick everyone's ass and then in the movie after that he gets his ass kicked again. Either way I like what they're doing. Something different instead of the standard here's the powerful sith lord beat him.

Anyhow, I will see it again (my niece and nephew want to see it in IMAX so I will take them as the are young and their dad is a dead beat).

Clearly he was still able to fight. But that doesn't explain how Finn or Rey suddenly knew how to operate a lightsaber. I wish I could pick up a sword and magically know how to fight effectively with it with no prior training.

"Able to fight" in the same way Tom Hardy was in the last fight in Warrior. Kylo Ren was clearly badly hobbled from both the bowcaster blast and the slash Finn put through his shoulder.

And the film establishes that both were trained fighters with melee weapons - Rey with her staff and Finn obviously as a stormtropper, with those goofy spinning cattle prods. Neither fights like a master, but against a beat-to-shit adversary (who, while trained, is also not a master) they have a solid shot.

To be honest I get people having a problem with it though. Things come just a little too easy to Rey. Nowhere near as easy as they come to someone like Neo in the Matrix, or Superman, but still a little too easy compared to Luke.

so what you're saying is that the character portrayal was accurate and consistent then?
Now that I've read more reasons for his pussiness - I have to agree.

Just really disappointing as I thought he was going to be badass like Maul (and it certainly looked that way early on in the movie).

i hear you

the way i look at it, the dude is likely the same age as anakin was when anakin was seduced by the darkside - i.e. still a young guy and inexperienced, despite his force ability (just look at anakin vs. kenobi). he's got a lot to learn and i'm pretty confident he will redeem himself as a villain in the 2nd or 3rd act.

Well that's prequel territory. Prequel territory ruined a tonne of shit regarding star wars, and for any new person watching star wars now 1-6 in order, isn't gonna be all "wow that's vader, he's a bad ass!" Instead there gonna think "somewhere, under all that shit is a whiny bitch"
