I'm envious of you guys. Because of a vision issue I can't really see 3D. Only exception has been the Oculus which has actually helped with the problem, albeit in a transient way.

To be fair you're not missing out on anything if you watch it in 2D. There's a particular shot of a Star Destroyer facing the audience that looks pretty impressive, but it only lasts a couple of seconds

EDIT: Nevermind, it's been mentioned already

Yeah, that was pretty cool. I saw a couple of people in front of me try to grab the Destroyer. (I would have too if there were no people around)

I thought it was absolutely horrible! I wrote down some thoughts when I got home, ill post it in a spoiler tag. WARNING IT CONTAINS MEGA SPOILERS! But it also explains in detail why it was so horrible. If this was a stand a lone non Starwars movie people wouldnt like it. It really is a movie for stupid people.

OKay let me start of my saying Star Wars is rather important to me. I watched the originals before I could even speak. They are myth to me, similar to religion. My moral compass is probably influenced by it substantially. I have been quite successful in life and I owe inspiration to those movies. So let's review this new piece of shit.

A good thing about the movie first. The CGI didn’t look TOO bad. Of course I prefer models, and I am a bit upset they didn’t use models more for the space scenes. Because of the CGI and JJ Abrams still a lot of it is a confusing mess, but it is nowhere near as bad as say AOTC. This is a positive.

Another positive is all the nerd references to the originals. Those are cool most of the time.

There are some aspects of the movie that I think relied too much on shitty CGI. The weird Asian women who runs the Canteena should have been a puppet or a human with make up. She looked extremely fake and George Lucasy ( in a bad way). The Supreme Leader Snoke looked like shit as well. I know he was a hologram but it didn’t look realistic at all. His overall design sucks as well. His name also sucks. Not at all sinister like ‘Vader” or “Palpatine”.

Let me talk about names a bit more. Why is the army that supports the Republic and Senate be called the “Resistance”? SHouldn't they be called the First Order since they are maintaining order in the galaxy whilst the bad guys are resisting control? Usually I would overlook this but because the rest of the movie is so bad I felt I had to point it out because this movie felt like getting kicked in the balls over and over. This was just one kick in the balls.

The new deathstar thing symbolises why the movie sucks quite well. First of all it is a Death Star ripoff. There is always a DS ripoff. Whether it be a second DS, the Droid Battleship or the Starforge thing in the games. I understand why they brought back a “super weapon”.

Secondly the thing isn't really introduced well at all. First we see it from outer space. We can tell it is probably a big cannon planet or something. Not suspenseful at all. The complete opposite of how the Death Star was introduced originally (Thats no moon). We then get told it is going to be fired. This isn't an epic scene like the firing of the Death Star with Tarkin and Leia. That was a legendary scene. This thing just shoots its lame canon and destroys 5 planets like it's nothing After a really cringe worthy speech.. We don't know what planets are destroyed (was it Coruscent?) and we don’t really care. In a New Hope Alderaan destruction was suspensful and a tragedy. We feel for Leia and we hate Tarkin for being a lying bastard. This was like “oh we have this cannon. Lets use it”. The good guys are like “shit that sucked, what if they use it on us? Oh wait they are, lets go blow it up”.

The plan to destroy it is laughable. First of all they only find out this thing exists after it destroys 5 planet, yet they can instantly bring up a map of it and compare it to the original Death Star. They then find out it's going to fire again and at them (which is funny since this thing has to eat a sun every time it shoots, which they make seem like the biggest walk in the park ever and not a big deal. Youd think such technology would be more awe inspiring to the characters?). After brainstorming for exactly 5 seconds Han, Leia and Fin think of a way to destroy it. That's how vulnerable this thing is.

The destruction of this new DS is dumb as well. First of all the party that has to land on it consists of 75 year old han, chewy and Fin. That's it. The fighters sent to blow it up are a couple X wings. No Y Wings, no Calamari Cruisers (despite Admiral Ackbar being present). I am not even sure how it is destroyed, but if you consider Luke's destruction of the death star a 10 (because of the suspense and amazing dialogue) then this is a 1. It is just horrible. it is so horrible I cannot describe it. There is no suspenseful trench scene with Luke trying to use the force (“Use the Force Luke!”), Vader on his tail (“The Force is strong in this one!”) and Han saving the day at the last second in a very suspenseful scene. This was just plain rubbish. Garbage. Not worthy of cinema. I believe the thing was destroyed by Chewy and a few grenades.

Han is predictably killed by his son Emo Ren (who is the worst villain ever by the way) but it was so predictable and unemotional it didn't even feel bad. It was actually welcoming because you just wanted the movie to ooze some emotion. Before that it's literally Ford carrying the rest of the cast because of his wit and humour. The other characters are dry and boring. Ford’s dialogue is full of one liners and is kinda cheesy, especially his interaction with Leia. It was just like “lol we broke up because our son became evil, but we didn't hate each other that much”. When he dies Leia doesn't even seem to rattled. Chewy goes into a short rage but seems to have recovered when they get back to the base, not even consoling Leia but walking right past her.

I think the movie was paced horribly. There are too many locations just for the sake of it (they travel to a jungle planet to visit one canteena just so they could have a green planet). No decent memorable lines other than the ones in the trailer.

Emo Ren is the complete opposite of Vader. At the start I was hoping he was cool but he loses his lightsaber fight to a girl who had her force powers ‘awoken’ a few hours earlier. He is luckily saved when the stupid DS planet starts falling apart and separates his unconscious body with the newly overpowered Rey girl (who has to either be Lukes daughter or Emo’s Sister). They try to make Emo Ren deep and 3 dimensional by making him at one point ask Vader for strength because he ‘feels the light’ inside of him. Making someone say they are conflicted does not mean the character has depth or is interesting! Also he is HIDEOUSLY ugly. How did Han spawn such a creature? Also why did he keep punching himself were Chewy shot him?

Minor characters sucked. The General who commands the bad guy armies is like a 28 year old wimp. He is NO Tarkin. Not even comparable. I think they made him purposely suck but he was a filler character at best. Sadly he survives for the next movie. The GOT girl who plays the silver stormtrooper is set up to be some badass but is likely killed offscreen and is no threat to anyone at any point. Useless filler character (wouldn't be surprised if she returns actually). The Grand Leader Snoke or whatever is a weird hologram. Not sure what to think of him just yet, he seems to be a Sith of some description.

If they wanted to really make the movie good the stupid DS should have destroyed the planet with Leia, C3PO and Akcbar on it, and then Han, Chewy and the boring twins could go and find Luke, who is their ‘only hope’. THAT would have been decent. This was a movie for dumb people.

Overall the movie lacked soul and memorable moments. Idiots who cannot think will like the lightsabre battle. That is who this movie appeals to. I know this sounds fucked up, but in many ways I prefer The Phantom Menace, which was paced better and had some decent scenes (like with Darth Maul. BTW the death of Qui Gon was a lot more intense and emotional than Han, despite Han being everyone's favourite childhood hero).

When I saw your disappointment initially I thought you had to be crazy. But having seen it, I see your points. Not as irritated by them, but they're reasonable.

The prequels catch too much flack, imo. Sure, they have some really dull moments and overall aren't as good as the originals, but there are great action scenes in every single one of them.
I loved seeing prime Jedi and the light saber action was fantastic. There was obviously too much CGI and the writing was poor.

I figure as much, usually. I have amblyoptia, which is a form of lazy-eye. I saw Avatar when it first came out and had a little success but it was still disappointing.

Like I was saying about the Oculus, it's managed to help. And apparently optometrists have started using VR to help improve vision in people with amblyopia. I'm hopeful anyway. The first time I used one, I used it for about an hour and noticed an increasing sense of depth. And it lasted for about another hour once I took them off. It was neat, seeing with more depth than I ever had in nearly 30 years. I don't use it too often, though. Maybe I'm irrational but I'm worried about the unintended effects on my eyesight.

lol, gotten to. Will you throw a hissy fit if the white female lead and black male lead get it on?
I dont care if the protagonists of movies are black, indians, orientals, womens, gays, dwarfs or whatever.

But it has to feel natural.Rey felt shoehorned. Everything she did was to show how much of a badass lady she was.
I dont have stomach for this kind of crap. I abhor third wave feminism and their stupid agenda. Rey, as a character, turned my stomach.

I am always like noooooooo when Darth Maul gets offed. He was badass.
In the expanded universe he survives after falling down the shaft. Expanded universe did a great job explainibg that character, check it out on wookipedia if you have time

I can see the argument for "agenda-pushing" in the grand scheme of the film, with people constantly referring to Leia as "the General", this and that, Captain Phasma and the "female Yoda" (that weird alien with the goggles). But Rey was a great character on her own, IMO.

I haven't read many Dragonlord reviews but this one raises a lot of good points. Good movie but I would give it a 7 at best.

Eh. I think it was meant to show how badass of a character she was - lazy writing no less. You're making it about her being a women.

Don't people in the military generally refer to their commanding officers by the ranks, not their first names?

I totally disagree with the whole forced feminism thing in this case. What you are actually saying is true for a lot of movies, where they specifically try very hard to make a strong female character and then they constantly shove it down your throat as if a strong female is a big deal or something new. This goes to the point where it is almost sexist towards women ("hey look a woman who can fight, isn't this mind blowing? This has to be a first!"). These characters often are strong to the point where it is obnoxious and it makes you want to punch a woman for the first time in your life. By the way this most often happens in action movies.

This is the kind of attitude that you see in many of these films, just men who don't understand women and/or white knights trying to tap into another sexist market (extreme feminism which is far too common). But that is not true for this film and I feel the female character (Ray) was strong but it also wasn't forced or shoved down our throats. It just seems like this is something you (the guy I'm replaying to) see in a lot of films so when you go into the cinema you are specifically looking for it. And you always find something you are looking for, even if its there or not. And we have all recently heard about how feminism is becoming really big in hollywood and I don't see a problem with that when the feminism is used to depict a realistic balance that is true in our own world as opposed to when they try to hamfist feminism. We all know that in the real world, its not always the men that are heroes and that woman can have interesting lives fit for a film as well.

Disclaimer: this is all coming from a guy who has liked Star Wars but never been a huge fan and gave this film a 7/10 only, and I didn't give much of that 7 for the story.

I think for most writers, the only way to fix this problem is to actually write male characters and when the story is completely written, take that male character and turn it into a female and then review and adjust a few details appropriately. This is the best way to be unbiased for some one like myself that doesn't understand women too well and is also a bit biased as we all are.

Its funny because Princess Leia didn't do shit in this film but stand around and be princess Leia and yet that is somehow supposed to be sexism at work against men just because she is called 'general'. Meanwhile the world will be dead if they don't find Luke Skywalker and Han Solo single-handedly drives the story in the desired direction around every corner. Again, this is coming from a man who is sexist towards women if anything.

.
Actually not.

You see, before watching the new iteration of mad max i heard a lot of complaints about charlize theron character. HEr being the protagonist and stepping on male characters and what not.

Well i loved the character and the movie, it felt natural and i didnt feel the movie tried to push an agenda.

What i saw here was clearly a movie trying to hard. Rey suddenly becoming an experienced warrior and beating the villain was cringe worthy. Her refusing the hand of Finn for no reason whatsoever.

Everything the movie showed she doing was to portray how awesome she was. How good a mechanic she was. How good a fighter she was. How good a jedi knight she was. How independent she was.

It bored and annoyed me.

But i actually could swallow all this if the movie was not a carbon copy of a new hope. What bothered more, more than the feminist agenda being shoved down my throat, was the third death star.

This movie is the best example of the two ways a film/story is made. Usually a good story is made when some one has a good idea. So they think for example: "i just thought of a great idea for a star wars sequel and how the story can continue, we should try and get a studio behind this". As opposed to what happened here obviously: "alright Joe says we have to make a star wars film, I guess we have to write a fucking story now."

I have to disagree with you here, even though I agree with the points you made I don't feel like they overdid it. You give about 2-3 examples which are true. But that wasn't enough for me to feel like it was hamfisting feminism. It felt balanced enough, maybe they overdid it just a bit (if I rewatch the movie, I will know more clearly). Another reasoning I have is that Han Solo was the guy driving the whole film even though she is supposed to be the main character. This may be because it made sense as he is the one with experience but, regardless, it still shows that they weren't overly committed to the female character. I think that may overall be why I didn't see it as forced feminisim. Even if the female character was too strong, there was so many other characters that got a similar amount of attention that it ended up being balanced and showing how any one can be strong/weak or good/bad.

Though I think the final battle where she beats Kylo Ren didn't have anything to do with her being male or female. It was more about how this character is supposed to be some jedi with ridicolous future potential (which was bullshit by the way). I do agree with almost everything I've read so far in this thread about the movie not being very good though. I have only read page 12/13 so far though.

This had all the little things the prequels were missing but it was missing some of the soul that they had.

Very good point.

I'm even more stoked for the next one. People complaining don't realize you have to build up a series in the first film. The ending made it finally feel like star wars is starting again.

that is a pretty lame excuse for why this movie cannot be good. The original Starwars was designed as a one off. They could have ended the series there. They obviously cannot do it with this one.

There was something missing. Some things missing... Cant quite place it but im going to say it has a lot to do with the force. Its barely mentioned.

Worst of all was Anakin 2.0. Ugly ass bastard with another crybaby attitude. What a badass....

I think it was the sense of adventure into strange places which was missing. There was a lot of thngs missing and a lot of things that could've been done better. But above all, they didn't explore the Star Wars universe too much. I feel like in all other films (even the prequels) you see so much variety of places, planets, races, etc. And the characters are constantly moving across the galaxy to unique and unimaginable places that bend the viewers mind. But this film had little to none of that, maybe because they were concentrating more on telling their story, bad idea.

Pretty much all of the first half of this film takes place in the desert planet or in the outer atmosphere of the desert planet. Then they go to the green planet and the rest is them blowing up the new death star. They should've had more. If not more, at least they should've explored the green planet and the death star in more detail. Especially the death star which was soo badass but we only see feint glimpses of it. I thought that was okay because at the time it seemed they were saving it for future sequels BUT then they blow it up. So fucking, what ever.
