Star Wars Squadrons

Curious, how did you play?

I used a gamepad and keyboard. Only games i did that.

Keyboard and mouse i reckon, although i *may* have had a joystick. Pretty sure it was old school KBM though.

got my pre-load sorted of squadros and it's released. now just to get some time to fire it up. Maybe tonight after the kids are asleep. pew pew pew

I vpn'd over to the UK to play early. Here's my initial thoughts:

- This is a seriously minimalist game. You can easily tell when and where the developers cut costs in terms of animation and sound. The overall feel of the gameplay is more shooter than flight sim. The alpha for Star Citizen feels more like flying through actual space than this game does, but that's kind of good considering you're meant to focus on combat more than anything else. I'd liken this game to flying through a (very pretty) matte painting if that makes sense.

- The story is really interesting but the characters are painfully one dimensional. No points for figuring out who they asked Morgan Freeman to voice or what the plot twists are going to be; you'll figure them out two seconds after you meet each character. You get to customize your character slightly, and they have a voice, but they barely ever speak. Nearly everyone is a minority (of course) and the one white guy option is a straight up Aryan on both the Imperial and Rebel sides. Yikes.

- The single player mode is NOT just a tutorial, there's actual fun dog fights to be had against the CPU here. Veteran difficulty is a real bitch for me and I'm playing on an Xbone gamepad.

- The advanced controls are fun as hell, they remind me of learning how to play the advanced modes of Battletech VR back in the day. You can adjust the increments of your energy changes, your drift controls, even your system restart method. It really let's you choose your own level of immersion.

- For some reason the game won't let you access advanced graphics options until you complete the prologue which to me is just dumb.

- This really is an updated cut/copy/paste of X-Wing / TIE Fighter games from the 1990's, which to me is a good thing. I miss the match speed button in that game, but overall the throttle in this does a good job of letting you get in line against other ships.

- Bottom line I haven't even tried multiplayer yet but for $40 I already feel like I got what I paid for.

Been too busy trying to finish Half Life: Alyx (Simply an Amazing game) that I didnt' even realize this was ready for downloading, I'll get some VR playtime in tomorrow after work and give some details, Holic's feedback above gives me some good vibes of what to expect.

I've only played like half an hour of the campaign, but I'm thinking about a refund. Flight feels awful, it's so funny watching your enemies and teammates bumping each other in tight spaces, customization is almost nil, and the M/K controls are some of the worst I've encountered. It doesn't suck, but I have enough games right now that I don't have to force myself to like a $55CA one. Feels like a game you can buy at Christmas for 20 dollars and hope they've released the "Here's the stuff we should have had at launch" patch.

Playing a flight sim game with a mouse and keyboard is probably the problem, controller at least, joystick will be my preferred control method, but we'll see once I get off work.

Yeah, I've just played War Thunder a ton of K/B with no problem, I thought this would be the same, haven't owned a controller in ages.

I refuse to play a flight sim without a joystick. Gonna keep an eye on this, looking meh so far

VR on this is fucking tits.

So played for an hour or so now in VR, some thoughts:

- Visually, its f*cking awesome. Tie Fighters feel like a flying coffin and flying around between Mon Cals and Star Destroyers is super immersive, its quite impressive and up there with HL:Alyx at making you feel like you're in that world.

- The Sound Effects Are slightly off. They don't sound wrong per-se, just kinda muffled and weak.

- Playing with A Joystick is definitely my recommendation, controls from the start worked but it tried to map things to buttons that don't exist on my Saitek Pro, so had to do some tweaking. I can imagine it being even cooler with a HOTAS but I fly lefty and they don't make left handed ones :/

- They really captured the X wing/Tie Figther game feel with the
engine/shields/weapons management. Even the targeting is reminiscent of the old space sims.

- Collisions need to result in death or extreme damage, Seeing the ships play "bumper cars" and not die breaks the immersion.

-Along the same lines with above, having "life" that you can refill with a repair button also makes it less of a space dogfighting sim and more of a FPS'ish Sims.

Haven't played online yet and barely finished the prologue but If you are a fan of the old X wing games, its definitely worth a play. 8/10

Man, user reviews are the most useless thing I’ve ever seen. Here’s an example of a typical user review on Metacritic for this game:

“Disney inclusiveness is awfull and brokes and the affection and self representation you could have for the characters. Good gameplay system.

0/10”

Good gameplay but they’re upset about the non-binary character so 0/10?

The stupid wokeness is kinda funny, the only white male pilot you can select on the rebellion looks like someone who would pay for his girlfriends date with her other boyfriend.

He looks like Kylo Ren.

Shit is poison. On one end people are bitching about the woke SJW stuff, and on the other people are complaining about not enough forced diversity from their corporate overlords.

I'd swear off videogames and play with my old labyrinth game if I didn't think someone would start pushing for the inclusion of a lit underside so the ball doesn't have to fall into a deep BLACK chasm before retrieval. Swear to gawd!!!!

Look at this racist shit. The whiter structure hemming in the black! And the only areas you can fall into? What areas do you have to go through?! THE BLACK ONES!

Been playing multiplayer today. It's way more fun than the single player.

Watched chocotaco play this yesterday. Gameplay looks no better than the Star Wars game I played 20 (?) years ago, and the radar is nowhere as good as on Elite (BBC B version).

And it’s an EA game so fuck it.

Its a super clear homage to Xwing-Tie Fighter. And its much more a flight arcade then a sim. Its fun to play though if you can let some shit go.

well, White people arent even a close majority on THIS planet, why would you think in a setting that encompasses thousands of worlds full of humans that a majority of them would be pale? people that fall into the 'white' category are what? 25% of the Earths population? and thats assuming we are being generous and folding Mediterranean and Semitic people into that.
