Star Wars "Grindhouse" 35mm 4K scans

Soporific detritus.

Anecdotally, a friend begged me to watch ROTS knowing I was completely turned off. He vouched for it, and even though we're still friends anytime anyone extols the "greatness" of ROTS I am filled with an unnameable contempt. At the same time, without the Prequels I would not love STAR WARS' greatest iteration: THE CLONE WARS as much as I do or should. That's an irony.

Yeah I get angry when people talk about ROTS like it’s fucking Godfather. That adult Anakin actor alone is so bad, he makes Keanu Reeves seem like DDL. He belongs in a fucking Tommy Wiseau movie, not at the helm of one of the biggest franchises in cinema history.

I haven’t checked out Clone Wars. Maybe oneathese days

That's funny because both have a similar odd timbre to their voices. Sandra Bullock has it a little too, so their speaking voices are very conspicuous.

Oh, and I know you don't take my word on recommendations, but I will say regarding THE CLONE WARS, anytime a Mandalorian is involved that episode or arc will blow your fucking doors off.

The world-building so metal it's hard to believe how much latitude fans won't give the main films. Have you read the purported Trevorrow script? Jesus Christ it's STAR WARS MEETS MATRIX.

When I told you this ship was death-proof, I wasn’t lyin’. The Millenium Falcon is 100% death-proof.
LOL that miserable bastard Ruth laughed at Tarantino's pitch for STAR TREK, but what the fuck. Tarantino doing TREK dialogue? Takes a real asshole to shit on that.

Au contraire, I think you have good taste, and a keen eye. The exceptions are sometimes extreme, but I consider them aberrations. I’m even willing to chalk your Love of The Last Jedi up to a head injury.

Hard to picture what QT had up his sleeve for Star Trek, but it surely would have been amazing. And boldly where no one had gone before.

Time travel. Back across the first two films and into some episodes. Familiar faces were promised. And I don't know if this has any veracity, but it was touted as a PULP FICTION type story (which could mean discrete chapters, who knows?).

It goes in that great, sad pile of not just ‘What-if’s, but legit ‘Fuck, Almost’s.

Along with Fincher’s failed pitch at Sony to do Spider-Man: The Gwen Stacy Story, & Aronofsky’s failed pitch to do Arkham Asylum.

I have to live with knowing BABY DRIVER was supposed to be ANT-MAN.

And I'm still crying over VEGA BROTHERS.

All you need to know is here:

https://www.thestarwarstrilogy.com/project-4k77/

They are big files but they offer a ton of different options. The gist is that someone got their hands on 35mm copies of Star Wars (New Hope) and Return of the Jedi. No ESB yet.

They aren't clean prints with tons of pops and scratches BUT, they are scanned in 4K and look like what you would have seen in the theaters in 77K. They do offer a DRN'ed version but give me the grain.

I have Harmy's version on Blu-ray and they are great but I'll eventually have to snag these versions. I recently watched the 4K versions just released on UHD and they are mostly a disaster. They barely look 4K and they've been DNR'ed to death. The 4K77 despite being a bit dirty look far superior to the UHDs and how Star Wars was meant to look.

You''re referring to the UHD physical discs themselves? Or do you refer to streaming?

Man, that's not what I wanted to hear.

I recently ran into side-by-side scans someone posted of the UHD discs and, although I didn't read too closely, I got the idea they were a vast improvement over UHD streaming and the Fox DVDs, which apparently had a great color retention (as opposed to good resolution). Then, again: did not read closely.

UHDs. I'm a physical media guy.

The original trilogy is an upgrade over the Blu-rays but not by much. The color timing is better but they DNR'ed the picture. It just isn't very sharp. For something like Star Wars, I expected demo-worthy material. Look at Blade Runner, E.T. or Apocalypse Now to see a perfect example of old movies on UHD that look incredible. This just looks like they slapped the Blu-rays on a disc and upscaled them to 4K.

The prequels are worse because Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith were shot on 1080p digital cameras so other than HDR, there's no benefit at all from having them in 4K. The Force Awakens and Rise of Skywalker look awesome on UHD though. I can definitely recommend those.

Excuse me while I sing myself to feeling better. Dear god why!

A question I remember seeing Luke Skywalker
first then then he looks through his binoculars
the the camera pans up and then you see the
Starships battling it out.

I swear this happened when the movie came out on the big screen.

I'm imagining things?
No ive seen this too I swear.
I think it was a deleted scene or something.

nup, starts around 0:54, deleted scene. Maybe it was updated and added to another version

The blu ray dot com review of the ROTS 4K disc says it has considerably more detail than the 1080p Blu Ray which I thought was interesting because like you from what I heard the film was finished on a 1080p master. Must be the 10-bit HDR that brings out more apparent detail or something.

It's easy to find if you sail the high seas. Quit being so pussy whipped by major studios who couldn't give two fucks about you or "artist integrity" and jump aboard matey!

My biggest beef with the whole Star Wars thing is I can't watch the movies I loved as a kid. If someone made the originals available I'd pay top dollar.

A few things at play. 10-bit HDR as you mentioned is a big one because the cameras they used back then despite being just 1080p were very high end cinema cameras that shot 10-bit 4:4:4 chroma subsampling. The HDR grading is able to use this greatly.

ROTS is using a new 4K DI(2K source) and upscaling like this is a common practice not to mention the average datarate of UHD bluray is far greater than 1080p bluray.
