This doesnt just have to be for standup but for MMA in general. I see all the time fighters spitting out there water in between rounds, and while I spar my trainer tell me to also. Never really got the whole concept.. I mean I could see drinking to much could make you puke or have a little stomach ache. But is there any other reasons?

Your body doesn't have enough time to absorb the water during a fight, so it's not going to rehydrate you. Why take the risk of drinking it and getting a cramp. All you need is to rinse and get the dryness out of your mouth. I'll sometimes swallow a little bit to wet my throat.

Swooshing around the mouth removes any impurities, lactic acid, mucous, blood in the mouth, etc. Sometimes blood also gets in the back of the throat from a nose bleed the swooshing, sometimes gargling of the water will help you spit it out instead of swallowing it. It's also not a great idea to drink a great deal of water in between rounds due to the fact that it can settle on the stomach heavily and you what happens then.

I dont spit it all the time, sometimes you just need that little bit. See how you feel with it.

both, spit at first but then take a tiny bit to drink before going back out

Are you thirsty? If you are don't drink too much. If not spit it out.

I do both, i donot think it matters as long as you dont down a whole bottle of water between rounds. I take a small small sip, then usualy spit the rest out.

I've had coaches/trainers say the same thing about drinking water during practice, but I've always drank a whole bottle of water during practice. The more I'm in shape, the less I drink though.

Spit or swallow?! LOL

I always give it a swish around my mouth to wet it and clear any mucus or blood thats in there and it goes straight back out then!

If I drink water during training it stuffs me.
Once ate a huge bowl of spaghetti bog half an hour before getting to training.
I wont be doing that again.
